He shook his head. "Don't get me wrong, I loved the work. They wanted to make me detective. But..." he looked away for a minute, drinking his water. "Things came up. My responsibilities changed... priorities..."
When he looked back at her, his smile was a little more strained. "Some memories are hard to get past. They make you a liability, and when that happens, the only responsible thing is to walk away. Try and get your head on straight."
He nodded at her drink. "Would you like more?" He flagged down a waiter, and took a glass of champagne from the tray.
"More water, sir?"
Way to make it obvious, he thought, trying not too look to annoyed. "Please."
The man nodded and walked toward the kitchen with Dick's empty glass. Dick offered the champagne glass to the attorney and his old classmate. "I really admire someone who sticks to her convictions. I was thinking it might be prudent to see how the D.A.'s office is holding up. Maybe throw a fundraiser or two when the time comes...?"
