From first glance, even Vicki had to admit that the crime did appear just as the police thought it might be. A mugging gone south. But something didn't sit right with her. Call it a hunch or call her crazy, most of the time that feeling in her gut was right about these sorts of things. Her fingers clacked away at the computer before her, piecing together her article bit by bit and trying to find the right way to say everything. She didn't know who half of these people were, save for what a bit of research provided her. Bruce Wayne was once a socialite playboy and then a hermit. Chances were that acting out in public came from growing up without parents in the home to give him the sort of attention that children required to grow up more even-minded.
It was sad really and a part of her stared at the picture that was selected for the article, feeling a sense of pity for him. She almost wanted to call her parents to make sure they were still there. But they were. The town she was from wasn't like Gotham. This big city, with lots of people and also a lot of crime. So it wasn't entirely all that different from New York, though the Big Apple lacked the costumed vigilante named Batman. Now that was another intriguing figure.
There was a lot of mystery in Gotham, a lot of stories she wanted to follow but Vicki had to be selective about them. She needed to follow that gut feeling that almost never steered her wrong. This sort of story had simplicity on the surface but underneath all of them was likely a twisted tale. Things were never simple, no matter how neatly they were presented. There were always multiple layers to a story. She was scratching at the surface with this article. She wondered if her new boss realized what handing her this article was doing to her.
So many questions that needed answering. Was someone watching Mr. Wayne? Did they know or conclude that he went to that place every year in order to memorialize his parents? Who was the mysterious girl of Asian descent? And Richard Grayson? From what she could find he was a ward and now heir but where had he been the past year? His leaving followed the death of Mr. Wayne's butler? And what of the other ward, Tim Drake?
Lots of questions and she felt like there was a giant puzzle before her that she needed to complete. Perhaps in another life, had she not such a love for the written word, Vicki would have been a police detective. She tapped her nails on her desk and then seized a pad of paper to make a list of what she needed to do. She'd wait a few days after the funeral to start talking to people. Let things settle down and then...that's when Vicki went to work. Until then...
This article wasn't going to write itself. Cracking her knuckles, Vicki went back to work, fingers flying furiously over the keyboard. The story had a deadline she wanted to meet and then she could formulate her plan of attack.
