Andrew had been pleasantly surprised when Mara asked to spend the first several weeks of her summer with him. She had plenty of friends she might have gone to instead, if all she wanted was to escape the McPhail family home and its stifling atmosphere. He wondered if there was some ulterior motive - had their parents forbidden her to do something she thought he'd let her get away with? So far, it didn't seem as such. She'd been perfectly content to lounge on his couch or sun herself in the back garden or accompany him on errands during the weekends. He was truly enjoying the time with her, even if he didn't say so. Granted, that didn't extend to every outing. Like the one they were currently on, with Mara having disappeared into a dress shop looking for something appropriate to wear to the Quidditch Gala. They'd actually wandered in a muggle store first, but when nothing there caught her eye, Mara insisted on popping up to Diagon Alley.
An hour later and Andrew was seated at an outdoor table of a cafe, alternating between his tea and water as he waited for his food. The weather was warm and the air slightly hazy. Before his accident, he'd have been reading, whether the paper or a bestseller he'd picked up from the bookstall by his home. Now, staring too long at small print made his head hurt, which led to bad moods. He didn't want to mar a beautiful day out with his sister, so he engaged in something that rarely held his fascination for very long: people-watching. There was a copy of a Quidditch magazine on the table for appearances, at least, though he hadn't turned a page in a while.
He hoped that Mara would be done soon. They could go home and laze away the rest of the day in the relative privacy of his yard. Well, Mara could relax. He'd continue to finalize things for the start of the English and Irish Quidditch season.
