Knockturn Alley on a Friday night was like no other place in the world.
Viktor dodged past a man trying to sell him potions from inside a trenchcoat filled with whirligigs, fake unicorn horns, bells, whistles, and parts of creatures unknown to the Bulgarian's eyes. The man shouted at him, waving first a fist, then some sort of spinning top, but Viktor ignored him, stoically clacking down the street as fast as his braces would take him. He was stopped on the next corner, this time by a leering house elf.
Shaking his head furiously, he turned the next corner and came to the casino. Earlier that day, Jimmy had suggested that he go gamble. Viktor understood that as it was meant--he was intended to lose just enough money to pay for whatever information he could gather. It wasn't an easy task and normally Kimmel was the one to do it. For once, however, Viktor had felt eager. He didn't like the break in the Ministry--while he wanted to put his trust in the Minister, as someone who had come from a society where the strong devoured the weak, he had his concerns about who was going to win this round.
I do not want to take sides, was the thought running through Viktor's mind as he entered the casino, shrugging off his coat. But he knew that at some point, the option to remain neutral was likely to disappear. And he knew which side the Krumlovs--and his old mentor Karkaroff--would have chosen for him. He wanted to believe that he was better than that but the fact remained that he never had been before.
He looked around the casino, his eyes searching and noting the available exits first, before glancing over at the games of chance. He moved quickly over to the roulette tables--it was the swiftest way to lose the money Jimmy wanted him to lose and Viktor didn't intend to stay all night.
