Katie hadn’t imagined she might feel the way she did when she spotted Oliver amidst the sea of people that morning. Their last conversation, while not terrible, had simultaneously filled her with hope and then dashed it again. She’d learnt that things with Ivy’s sister Emilia had gone south, but also that he cared for her and that he had some regrets about not having explained things to Katie first.
It’d left Katie feeling sombre, but surprisingly not as annoyed as she felt should have been. She and Oliver hadn’t just had some heat of the moment shag and then parted ways. Katie had slept the night, had been happier than she’d been in such a long time in his company. It was weeks ago now, more than a month, in fact, but despite all the brief conversations they’d had via their journals since, Katie had still been looking forward to seeing him.
But this…
As soon as Katie’s eyes found him she was on the move to wind her way through small groups of people to reach him. She might not have known how she felt, but the flutter in her stomach and the memory of the things they’d talked about, the things that they’d done that had- at least to Katie- changed the entire tone of their friendship… Katie knew it was a risk to leave the group and risk either of the Montgomery seeing her with Oliver, but both looked busy enough with their own conversation and so as Katie drew near she couldn’t help the smile that crept to her features.
“I need to leave soon,” She murmured as she drew up next to him, her hand slipping into his easily. She didn’t know how Oliver would feel about that, but the temptation to do so was just too much to deny. “are you okay?” She hadn’t seen him at all during the service- though she’d kept an eye out, not only for him, but for other friends and family she’d not seen or spoken to.
