Memorial Service Who: Everyone When: Wednesday, September 6th, 2002, Afternoon Where: Hogwarts What: Memorial Service for Minerva McGonagall
I cannot guess what we'll discover When we turn the dirt with our palms cupped like shovels But I know our filthy hands can wash one another's And not one speck will remain
I do believe it's true That there are roads left in both of our shoes But if the silence takes you
On the grounds of Hogwarts sits an old cemetery. Students walk by it each day, not paying it any mind at all. The tombstones are chiseled with forgotten names and no matter how often they are cut back, wild roses and ivy find their way back in. It is in that modest, old and nearly forgotten cemetery where Minerva McGonagall requested to be buried. Her last will demanded no grand parade, no big affair. She requested a simple, modest and tasteful service.
The Ministry gave the witch what she wanted. Her tombstone lacked any frills or poetry. It read simply
Minerva McGonagall 4 October 1935 - 1 September 2002 Beloved Teacher
The memorial service took place on the Hogwarts grounds. Headmistress Sinistra spoke at length, giving an emotional and moving tribute. Several other staff members spoke briefly before the Minister of Magic gave the final address. He spoke of her kindness, her intelligence, her unwavering love for her students and her unfailing compassion. Not a single speech hinted at anything political.
The Ministry upheld their bargain. All those who attended were given space to mourn. Refreshments were provided by the Hogwarts elves. Students were able to attend as well. It was peaceful, calm, and respectful.
