As a rule, Theo didn't think of himself as a particularly caring person. In fact, if anything, Theo was usually acutely and often uncomfortably aware of how selfish he could be. Zach had even been one to point it out a time or two- not that Theo thought his friend had much room to talk- but after hearing how brutal the Puddlemere vs. Falcons game had been on the wireless and then seeing the smudge of black Zach had written in his journal that appeared to be intended for him and Theo had been unable to ignore it.
In fact, the idea that Zach was hurt and had thought of him had set off an uncomfortable cramp in the pit of his stomach. Not at all because Theo hated the idea that Zach couldn't just seem to let him go, but mostly because he'd crossed it all out, had thought twice and come to the conclusion that he couldn't say what he'd wanted or needed to. Theo might not have known what he wanted, but right then he knew that it wasn't that. Zach didn't mince his words, or if he did then Theo was yet to witness it, and the thought that he cared enough to still be reaching out had a sickening realisation dawn on him...
He cared. His instincts- no matter how buried under logic and reason they were- were screaming at him to drop what he was doing and go to see how Zach was. And so he did. He messaged first, tried to make it seem as if he hadn't seen the mess of ink at all, and minutes later apparated to the Leaky to pick up some supplies from Diagon Alley before the shops were due to close. The gin he'd buy from the pub before leaving. It would be more expensive that way, at least to buy a whole bottle, but Theo didn't want to waste time hunting down a half decent brand when he knew that Tom already stocked the type that Zach drank.
Once he was finished and had everything set (including enough Chinese food for a Quidditch team- Theo remembering how fierce Zach's appetite could be following a match) and he apparated straight to the other man's home, surprised to find his attempt at landing right inside, specifically in the kitchen so he could set down the food, drink and other things he'd picked up that might help an injured Quidditch player, worked.
