During the explosion - Nora and Joseph
Lucas had spent most of the festival on Joseph's shoulders. He had suggested they all go to the festival together, but Marcus had shrugged off his invitation and gone off to drink with his mates. Good riddance, Joseph thought. He hated spending time with Marcus. Each word out of his brother's mouth was a reminder of his stupid and inferiority. Instead, he got to spend a rather pleasant day with his sister-in-law and son.
Moments before the explosion, Joseph had relaxed enough to slip his hand to the small of Nora's back, his thumb moving in small circles. It was almost a perfect moment and would have been one if the world hadn't started to burn.
As the ride started to crumble around them, Joseph grabbed his son and wrapped him up in his large arms, protecting him from any bits of shrapnel and debris. In the fray, he'd lost Nora for just a second and now she was gone. Fuck.
"NORA," he yelled, trying to ignore the cries of Lucas. He looked around wildly, his head moving back and forth until he spotted her small frame pinned under something heavy. "Fuck, Nora," he said and rushed to her side.
