Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry |
Following the death of Albus Dumbledore in 1997, Minerva McGonagall was placed in position of Headmistress. However, due to a vote by the Board of Governors’ (which was influenced heavily by pressure from Death Eaters and Voldemort) Severus Snape was appointed Headmaster of Hogwarts on September 1st, 1997. Professor McGonagall was allowed to remain in her post, as were other Order aligned professors (such as Hagrid) until the following year at which they were terminated from their positions for various untruthful indiscretions. A mandatory law was put into place that all students that were citizens within the control of the British Ministry of Magic must attend Hogwarts, even if that student lives abroad. Beginning in September 1997 all students are required to show proof of their blood status before boarding the Hogwarts Express, those without proof of blood status are taken into custody of the Ministry and commonly placed on trial for “stealing magic”. Muggleborns are no longer contacted by owl or personal visit for their invitation to attend Hogwarts, and those contacted for the 1997-1998 school year were also placed into custody of the Ministry upon arriving at Platform 9 ¾. Defence Against The Dark Arts is now the Dark Arts, and this subject along with Muggle Studies are required for all students in all years. These classes are commonly taught by Death Eaters, or those publicly aligned with their ideals. Quidditch games and Hogsmeade weekends still continue as scheduled, although the privilege is restricted to students who are openly outspoken against the government and are supporters of Harry Potter. Teachers still are expected to chaperone these weekends, and those teachers who are unmarried are expected to live within the grounds of Hogwarts castle. Those professors who are married or have other residences must still fulfil their required patrol duties, and therefore each have their own room within the castle when it is required to spend the night. House points and discipline are at the discretion of the professors of Hogwarts, provided that any action requiring disciplinary action happens within the classroom or in the presence of a professor. Any actions that occur outside of the classroom are subject to being transferred to the Heads of the students House for discipline, and in extreme cases to the Headmaster. Curriculum is developed by each Hogwarts professor as they see fit to teach, and each curriculum is approved by the Ministry before each term. The Ministry of Magic has the right to deny, edit, or add to the curriculum as they see fit and refusal to teach this approved curriculum would result in dismissal from a teaching position. |
