It was no surprise to anyone that Bellatrix was a woman who acted largely on impulse. She was capable of making plans (on some days) but for the most part she preferred to give into her whims whenever possible. And so when she had woken up that morning with a sudden urge to go to Germany, she certainly could not think of any pressing reason that the Ministry would require her presence instead. Maybe it was because she had been in the library the night before and stumbled across an old book she had stolen from Andromeda when they were young and still sisters. Or perhaps it was just a strange craving for bratwurst. Likely the latter.
Either way, after a few quick errands in the wizarding district of Berlin, by mid-morning she was walking - or more accurately stalking - down the street of a small German town. She did not have any particular plans, although there was still the matter of the running total of people to kill and/or maim in retaliation for the Order's inability to keep their opinions to themselves. But somehow she did not think Rabastan would appreciate her turning this German town into her hunting grounds of the day considering his efforts to win the neutrality of the German Ministry. So she really was making every effort to restrain herself and beginning to think that perhaps this whole "German whim" wasn't all it was cracked up to be when some irritating little Muggle man came barrelling down the street and crashed into her. (Of course he would have pointed out that Bellatrix was the one who had so obviously refused to move out of his way when it was clear that he was in a hurry, but she was absolutely not going to move out of the way for a Muggle.)
Bellatrix's wand was out in an instant and she was about ready to just kill him on the spot when that little, rarely-heard voice of reason in her mind suggested that maybe, just maybe killing a man in broad daylight, in the middle of a somewhat busy street in a foreign country was not her best idea. She had her moments. Instead she gave a surreptitious little flick of her wand and cast a body-bind on the man before roughly grabbing his arm and pulling him into an alley behind the grocer's. A couple of quick spells were enough to shield them from the view of any passers-by on the street who got a little too curious and once that was dealt with, she turned her wand back on the Muggle. "It is terribly rude to crash into someone and not stop to apologise, you know," she lectured as she threw a cruciatus at the man.
The day had been pretty normal for Ted, walking Clark to school that morning before stepping into his shift at the muggle grocery store. It wasn't extravegent or anything, but the job gave them a little bit extra money and that was generally a good thing. He had been cleaning the store up a bit, as the minutes counted down to the end of his shift. Grabbing a few boxes that were emptied and discarded, Ted walked toward the back of the store toward the door that led out into the alley where the dumpster sat. Approaching the door, Ted heard noises outside and dropped the boxes carefully by the door, opening it just a bit to look out. It didn't take long to realize what was going on, a witch had her wand pointed at a man who was screaming his head off. It was obviously a Death Eater with whatever poor muggle had happened to cross her path. Ted stepped out into the alley and shot a blasting hex at the witch, hoping to break her concentration enough that the crutiatus would stop.
"Didn't your mother ever tell you that it wasn't nice to go around picking on people that are weaker than you?" Ted questioned, casting a quick protection spell on the muggle incase the Death Eater decided that it would be a good idea to keep attacking the innocent man. Still, Ted moved so that he stood in front of the muggle. It was true that Ted didn't know the entire wizarding world but there was something familiar about this one and it didn't take him long to figure it out. Looking at the witch, he noticed what a resemblence she had to his wife and he quickly sorted out that it was likely her sister, Bellatrix. Ted didn't know much about Bellatrix other than the fact that she was an angry, bloodthirsty elitist who walked the line of psychopathic (and really, what else did Ted need to know about her?).
Ted was generally a pacifist, so fighting wasn't really second nature to him, and so he stood their a bit awkward for a second before sending a slashing Hex right below her knee hoping that it would distract her a bit, make it harder for her to stand, something. He kept his wand pointed at her, knowing that this was going to be far from over, and breifly thought that he should have just turned away, but there was no way he was going to let her hurt someone who couldn't fight back.
Bellatrix saw the door swing open out of the corner of her eye and she moved quickly, turning her wand on Ted instead, although he did manage to get his wish of diverting her from her Muggle and the cruciatus. She wasn't expecting the blasting hex at all - what were the chances that she would run into another wizard behind a Muggle grocer's in Germany - and while she had mostly managed to move out of the way, his hex still caught her side and threw her off-balance for a moment as she clenched her jaw. The pain of the blasting hex radiated through her side as it tore open her skin and it was only through sheer force of will and anger that she kept herself from crying out. Instinctively she threw up a shield to give herself a moment to regroup, or more accurately get her bearings. This was just odd. Who would honestly be so foolish to put himself between her and a Muggle she had obviously been having her fun with?
She might have just chalked it up to being in Germany and going unrecognized but then the man spoke in a British accent (and clearly not that of the pureblood aristocracy) and her curiosity was piqued. Not that it really made a difference - either way she was going to make him pay for his presumption. "My mother and I did not always see eye to eye," she replied as she tilted her head and looked him over from head to toe. "Mudblood, terrorist or both?" She could not think of any other reason that a British wizard would be living in Germany, working in this place after all.
His slashing hex was deflected by her shield but Bellatrix waved the charm away after that, not wanting to hide behind shielding charms. She quickly retaliated with a slashing hex of her own, except she aimed straight for his chest. It wasn't a particularly strong hex, but she was assuming that he did not know who she was and so she felt like toying with him for a bit. Let him think he had a chance against her, figure out who the hell he was and then kill both him and the idiot Muggle that he was trying to protect.
Ted sneered at Bellatrix when she spoke, his eyes narrowing as she said 'mudblood'. "Really Bellatrix? You and your mother, you and your sister. Have you ever thought, maybe its not them, its you!" With that, he daringly took a few steps closer to her. It wasn't that he was going to physically assault her, but as a way of showing that despite the fact that Bellatrix Lestrange was one of the most frightening figures on the war, he was not going to let that stop him from doing the right thing. "I am a muggleborn Wizard, not a mudblood, I will not have murderous filth like you turn me into garbage to fit you elitist propaganda." He told her between gritted teeth.
He had braced himself. He knew that he was going to be hit, but Ted wasn't in a lot of battles, none really, not since the first war. When the slashing hex made contact with his chest, he let out a strangled gasp, half in shock, half in pain. He stumbled a few steps back and nearly dropped his wand. His free hand flew to the slice that expanded across his chest a little ways. It was no shock of course that blood had already began to seep into his shirt. It took him a few seconds to regroup, his eyes darting back up to her, anger set on his jaw.
"Is that the best you can do?" He asked. Ted was not normally a very cocky person, but being hit caused the mood to strick him, an arrogance that he hadn't had since he had been a kid, a school boy really. His fists balled, and his wand was gripped tighter in his left hand as he levitated a few of the heavy crates residing by the dumpster at the end of the alley. He sent them sailing towards her hoping that at least one of them would crash into her. He knew that moves like that would not win him the battle, or maybe not even make a big distance, but he hoped it would give him enough time to get the muggle to relative safety. Grabbing the man roughly, Ted yanked him toward the door, pushing him inside as quickly as he could.
Forced to deal with the flying crates, Bellatrix simply vanished two of them before sending a the third flying into the wall, exploding it into thousands of tiny splinters of wood and chunks of whatever food product had previously been within them. After the fact, she realised that likely had not been the best of strategies since the splinters were now flying every which way in the alley and a few of them were now embedded in her skin. The pain was more of an irritant than anything, rather like being hit with a nasty stinging hex, but Bellatrix was more annoyed with the fact that she had managed to actually injure herself. She only hoped that the irritating Mudblood had been hit by them as well. But in her distraction, he had succeeded in getting the Muggle out of her grasp, which only angered her further. A quick spell slammed and locked the door shut before Ted could have the chance to escape as well.
"Who are you?" Bellatrix demanded, her eyes narrowed as she trained her wand straight at Ted's chest. His surprising familiarity with both her and her family did catch her off guard, but then he looked to be about the same age as her so it was possible he would know her from Hogwarts. She did not recognise him, but then she had never been in the habit of paying attention to Mudbloods. The idea that she had somehow managed to stumble across one of the people in the world who she would most like to torture and kill was just unfathomable. The world had been good to Bellatrix, but not that good. Still, the comment about her sister... "Give me your name, Mudblood."
Regardless of who he was, she was done toying with him. He had stolen her plaything and was meddling in matters that did not concern him. Another flick of her wand sent a bone-shattering hex flying at him, followed quickly by another slashing hex, this one at full strength, intended to cut deeply into his skin wherever it hit. It may have been a bit of pride on her part, but she certainly did not want to leave him with the impression that her earlier curse had been her full capability.
Ted stepped back and turned quickly to Bellatrix as the door slammed and locked. He shook his head a little bit and focused entirely on the psychopathic witch in front of him. "Who am I? I am but a guy in an alley. I am a muggbleborn wizard. I am one of many who would most like to see you dead as soon as possible." He said, smirking just slightly at Bellatrix. He was quite pleased that he was annoying her, in a way and the slight look of confusion (or maybe curiousity) on her face gave him an odd satisfaction. "I am Theodore Tonks, I'm almost offended, sister-in-law that you did not recognize me." He cracked his knuckles and was about to attack when he noticed her wand movements.
He tried to dodge the first spell, turning a little bit to avoid it, only to have it nip his ribs on the right side of his body. He attempted to turn with the hex, feeling the ribs splintering with the bone breaking hex, wincing in pain. Turning only made it worse. He had been focused on the first hex, the breaking bones, that he didn't notice the second one until after it had collided with his side, slicing it down the middle. He cried out in pain, letting himself fall onto a kneeling position in the alley way, his body hunched over and his breathing a little shallow. He looked up at Bella, slinging a hex at her. From his wand came a fireball, moving toward Bella.
So it was him. The little Mudblood who had been the impetus for Andromeda's betrayal. In an instant, at the admission of his name alone, Bellatrix's strained grasp on her temper had snapped. There was a faint expression of surprise that crossed her face for just a moment but it was quickly gone as she opened her mouth and just started screaming at him. "You are not my family. You destroyed my family. Tore it apart with your filthy Muggle blood. You took my sister from me. And I am going to make you pay."
She took a step towards Ted and easily blocked his fireball, turning it into nothing more than a harmless little pile of ash. Her wand slashed through the air again as she cried out "Crucio," channelling all of her rage into the spell. Although Bellatrix never had trouble summoning the magic required for the cruciatus - wanting to see other people suffering was second nature to her - this was different. This was the first time in recent memory (at least several months anyway) that she could recall casting the spell with a true, burning desire to see her actual victim be the one screaming and writhing in pain. He was not just some substitute or a convenient target. No, this was Andromeda's Mudblood husband - the man she had chosen over her own family - and Bellatrix was going to make him beg for death.
Ted was smirking as she screamed at him, determined to be amused by her despite the severity of the situation. He had opened his mouth to respond to her when the crucio struck him square in the chest. His body slouched into itself a little more an hand on each side, planted firmly on the ground of the alley to keep him from falling over at any given time. The pain ripped though his body and his eyes watered as he tried to stare up at her. He cried out in pain, there was no stopping it, he couldn't. He tried focusing on other things. His wife. His daughter. Clark. Anything that would reasonably serve to keep his mind off the pain. He could feel the blood running out of his cuts a little faster and he tried to keep from panicking. He glanced back up at Bellatrix. He just had to pick up his wand. He just had to cast something at her, but the pain was making it harder and harder for him to thing.
"I did not destroy your family." Ted finally said between gritted teeth, snarling at her and shaking in pain. "It was you who destroyed your family. You and your worthless notions of blood status and wealth that tore your family into pieces. I love your sister which is more than I can say you or you family truly ever did. I accept her for everything she is and together we have a happy and healthy family. You are the ones who pushed her away. You are the once who didn't accept her choices. She chose me." If he was going to die, he wanted to make sure his thoughts on the subject were clear.
Bellatrix lifted the curse and moved closer to him, swiftly leaning down to wrap her hand tightly around his neck. She normally wasn't one for physical violence - aside from the occasional fun with knives, her wand was just so much more effective, but in this case she just wanted to hurt him and make him suffer with her bare hands. To be perfectly honest, she did blame Andromeda far more than Ted for her defection. She was not so foolish as to think that Andromeda did not know exactly what she was doing when she chose this disgusting Mudblood over her own family, but Andromeda was not here. And Ted was.
Her wand still clenched tightly in her other hand, she moved to press the tip of it into his bleeding chest. "I loved my sister," she growled through her own clenched jaw. "Do not dare to presume that you know me or my family. She is the one who betrayed us. And it was because of you. Which is why you have to suffer now." The pitch of her voice rose with each strained declaration until she was practically shrieking at him once again. She fired one of her favourite burning hexes at him, designed to blister and burn his skin without the messy addition of an uncontrollable fire.
"This can all end, you know," she lectured. "Just admit that you are nothing more than Mudblood filth who had no business marrying above your station in life and I might even consider letting you run home to your blood traitor of a wife."
Ted took in a deep breath as she released the curse, coughing a bit as her hand came around his throat. Getting a second to asses the situation, Ted grabbed at Bellatrix's wrist, yanking it away from her throat. He made a small attempt to twist it, maybe even break it as he attempted to push her away long enough to aparate with out taking her with him. But it was too late, by the time he had managed it, her wand was digging into his chest. He cried out in pain again, his whole body throbbing with pains, all in varying degrees, the most focused being the point that he wand was digging into.
"If you loved your sister you would not have disowned her for loving someone, for being happy with someone, instead of trying to keep her in a family where instead she is expected to marry someone who isn't worth her because he is of "better" blood than I am. I suffer now because you are a psychopathic wench who obviously has family problems and could do well on some heavy medication." It was obvious that what he was saying would make things worse, but he felt that there wasn't anything else he could do about it. If he was going to go down, it was going to be telling Bellatrix what was on his mind. His eyes tightened shut as he felt his skin pucker as the burning spell ripped through him, and he let out a groan of pain. His eyes flashing open for a second.
He knew he had to do it. He knew that he just had to give in. He had to return to his family and even though it was very slim that Bella would keep her word, he knew he wouldn't last much longer if he didn't get free now, so it was relatively worse swallowing his pride. "Fine. I'm a filthy mudblood (and proud of it), and I married the woman I love who is so much better than I deserve." He had said everything that Bellatrix had wanted him to say, in his own words. Now he just had to wait it out.
Bellatrix let out a sudden, strangled cry of surprise and pain when he wrenched her hand away from his neck - and this was why she preferred her wand - although she would have to wait until she got home to figure out if it was broken. She definitely felt something pop, but it wasn't her wand hand and even though it hurt like hell, it could therefore be dismissed as inconsequential for the time being. Rosier would deal with it if necessary. That did not, however, mean that she was going to tolerate Ted's attempts to harm her. She actually did have every intention of letting him go - not out of any mercy or compassion, but merely to torment Andromeda with the knowledge of just how close Bellatrix had come to killing her husband. But that resolve was weakening as Ted continued with his stubborn defiance and she was beginning to consider the merits of just sending Andromeda his parts in a box. Except for the part where she didn't know where her disowned sister lived. That was something she was definitely going to have to remedy.
She had stepped back out of his reach, not wanting to give him another opportunity to harm her although her wand was still trained on him. "I told you. Do not speak of my family. Andromeda knew the consequences of her actions when she made her choice," Bellatrix snapped before taking a deep breath to try and control her emotions. Remember your plan she reminded herself before continuing with a more controlled, but obviously strained voice. "I could easily kill you right now. I should kill you. But I am going to let you live. Because I want you to run home to your wife and make sure she understands that while she may think she is safe here, hidden away in Germany, I have not forgotten her crimes. And I will come for her. I suppose in a way, this means you owe me a life-debt," she said, laughing suddenly, the sharp piercing sound a marked contrast with all of her shrieking and yelling from just moments before.
Of course she still had every intention of sending him home barely clinging to his life and she fired another nasty slashing hex at him, this time aimed at his stomach. With any luck he'd be forced to hold his intestines in with his own hands, but she wasn't going to stay to watch. "Go home," she demanded. "Go home and tell your wife." With that, she gave a quick flick of her wand and apparated away with a sharp crack before her resolve broke and she just killed him. (Not to mention that both her wrist and side were really starting to throb now and it was quite the annoying distraction that really ought to be dealt with.) Ted had gotten off easy, as far as she was concerned, but the message to Andromeda would be quite clear and she would have to be satisfied enough with that. For now.
