Title: Through a Glass Darkly

Author: [info]whitecotton

Rating: NC-17

Word Count: 19,000

Warning(s): *Everything is straight up smut of the to be expected kind.*

Summary: The only way in which Severus can bear Lily’s death is to know he pays harshly for his redemption. However, in making his grand gesture – his sacrifice – has he paid the price with the wrong coin? Luckily there are others debtors to guide him.

A/N: I took great pleasure in writing this for you, [info]rowaine. I hope you enjoy reading it as much and that I have given you what you asked for. This story begins with dialogue taken verbatim from DH, the chapter titled ‘The Prince’s Tale’. Specifically, it happens once upon a Halloween, 1981. My thanks to my hand holder, [info]atypicalsnowman, for bouncing the plot back and forth with me: darling, I couldn’t have done it without you. For her wonderful and insightful assistance, plus her ready humour, thanks also go to my beta, [info]raewhit. Hugs, darlings.

OK, seriously love Severus's emotional state that night--perfect and yet I love that he readily accepts Harry's truths, because anything else would truly be impossible. I like the way they bond, both trying to figure out what can be done. Great use of the Pensieve to give the time travel effect. And I must say I love the breaking tea cup at the end. *g* Excellent fic. Great job.

Very well done! I loved how Severus was given a second chance and the suggestion of a shocked McGonagall in the end made me laugh. From start to finish, Harry and Severus's growing relationship was very interesting to read. I liked how Severus slowly went from suspicious and fearful to slowly finding himself falling for Harry.

So good to see Severus get the second chance which JKR denied him. He'll make the most of it - Harry will make sure of that. I loved the way Harry insisted on Severus coming with him at the end, and I, too, smiled at the sound of the tea cup breaking. Well done!

I'm left teary eyed and practically speachless. None the less, I shall try to leave a decent comment. :)

The emotion through the entire story, simply wonderful, and so true to character. I guess that was one of the problems I had with Her ending, it just didn't ring true. Brilliant use of the Pensieve, and your last line is killer! :D Breaking tea cups are very fun to use. :D Wonderful plot, and the smut was pretty damned good too! :D

This was just brilliant from start to finish. Severus emotion state the start just perfect, his uncertainty about Harry at the beginning, their evolving relationship over the few days and then at the end the idea that McGonagall would be shocked, like nothing normally shocks her was funnily sweet.

Loved this so much :D

What a neat story -- I liked the confusion of them getting caught in the memories together, and the way they were able to spend time together and solidify their relationship as they tried to discover what was happening.

Absolutely beautiful, with so many memorable moments. I adore the ending in particular -Harry realizing what he has learned, and the two of them getting another shot at life. The scene where Severus realizes that there's another version of himself in the room was delightfully shiver-inducing as well. A great read.

Excellent! I love fics in which Snape gets his just reward and this is a wonderful, warming example of the genre.

What I loved about this, from the start, was the novel way that this was a time-travel story, but then it actually wasn't. Poor Snape, and thank god for Harry's progressive obsession. You did a great job with bringing Snape along--it never felt forced or unbelievable. I really was intrigued at how they were going to get out of this mess. Don't want to spoil it for anyone, but your ending was genius, and I'm so pleased that Snape got to 'enter' the room again.

Beautiful writing as always, L. And such a wonderfully original idea. I enjoyed it so much!

I adored the twist on time travel and the burgeoning relationship between Harry and Severus. So very well done.

And oh how I'd love to see Minerva's face when they walk through that door.

This story brought a smile to my face on a dismal day. I love the unique take on Pensieves and memories and not-quite-time-travel. Excellent work.

A really original idea. If someone else has used exactly this method of time travel then I haven't come across it (which is perfectly possible). I loved the way you talked about how the "real" people reacted to the "ghosts" that were Harry and Severus and I adored all Severus's angsting over having Harry in his bed and not knowing quite what to do about it. Very glad he worked it out later :)

Beautiful as always, darling.

I've not been reading much at all recently, no time again. But I loved this. Your writing is, as always, sublime. I loved the premise of the memories being a way for them to be together, to get to know each other and the tea-cup was such a haunting image.

Lovely.

*hugs*

The dynamic you've created develops the exploration the issues of guilt and redemption, responsibility and worth beautifully, without losing the suspense and what-comes-next part of the plot. Wonderful to read!

I love the utter confusion of the beginning. I'm pretty sure I said "What the fuck?" out loud to the screen a few times. And, as always, I was drawn into the story completely, watching Harry and Severus discover each other and themselves, really. I loved Severus' uncertainty, his anger, and his realizationtion at the end of what atonement really meant.

Beautifully done.

Great story! I loved being thrown in the middle of the ghostly mystery and sharing the confusion with Severus and Harry. Poor Harry, he must have spent a lot of time in the Pensieve, watching and regretting and wishing…and Severus, having to hear about his own death and everything else from Harry. It was all quite sad, but luckily they found comfort and distraction in each other.

The bedroom scene was so full of tenderness and fragility; I loved Severus’ thoughts about the robes and about what he and Harry would be doing if they were lovers and how he provided awkward yet adequate comfort to Harry. Also, it was lovely to see Severus’ anger melt away at Harry’s words in the library. Beautiful, too. And hot!

This is an interesting idea to contemplate:

So far, his overriding conclusion was that, in his selfishness, he had forfeited all rights to the management of his life, and would therefore put it in wiser hands. The wiser hands being Dumbledore’s.

And I loved that Severus felt like this:

In fact, it made Severus feel even more despondent, as though discovering that Harry’s optimism was not endless placed a cloud over their future.

Delightful story!
At first I was quite confused, but then I imagine you intended it that way - for the reader to share poor Severus' confusion about what was happening. As things became more clear I began to get nervous about how our boys were going to escape this trap.
The bedroom scene was a particular favorite, too. Severus' thoughts were perfect and the eventual sex was just as it would have been given the circumstances, I imagine.
When DD showed up, all knowing and all seeing I knew it would be all right. He really is the type to have set something in place for his boys, especially since their predicament was due in part to him.
And OMG! Poor Minerva in the end! *g* I would have given a lot to see her face. ;)
Well done! Sorry it took me so long to get to it, although I admit, I did save it as a treat for a day when I could take my time and savor it. :)
