The very edible, unbeatable, Unspeakable Snape
Wow, how fun. This just zings off into a kind of heightened horror-humor-absurd from the very first lines. Harry's humdrum life is given realistic detail with the crup's annual checkup, a perfunctory peck on Ginny's cheek, and the tedious re-runs on the telly.
And then, from the utter innocence of little Lily, that deep-voiced, Exorcist-like prophecy. We know right there things are going straight for crack-land, especially when feckless Harry enters the department of the ultra-trained Unspeakables. How could he not bung something up?
You've got one of my absolutely favorite Snapes here, the wicked wanker, shamelessly sensual and always with a plan up his sleeve - if not a wand. I love the Snape who's always two steps ahead of Harry, even though his lust for Harry means one foot has always, already, been firmly in the trap. This is the Snape that revels in his own complexity. He plays Harry in circles to end up where they both want to be, in an elaborate emotional chase that's complicated by Snape's desiring deviousness as much as Harry, while Harry's only just stumbling into discovering his own desires.
I love how beautifully funny this is, with that slightly angsty edge of Snape's imprisonment, another example of the Wizarding World's casual cruelty, that's foiled by Harry's utter earnestness. Harry creates complications where things were simple (Snape snarling at him for planning so slowly, lol), and cuts straight through to simplicity where the WW made it complicated. I think that's part of what makes it so crackishly delightful; no matter what anyone planned, once Snape and Harry are in action, nothing stays on track. Even the owl's in a flutter!
The whole story is so rich with details, it opens up infinite possibilities for imagining them behind and beyond this glimpse. Again, this is a Snarry fic that proves how much more creativity remains in this fandom. This is a post-DH Snarry-verse I'd love to see more of!
