INTERVIEW # 15
Original poster: snarrymod
Your Name: Vain (vain)
Your Team: Angst
1. What made you decide to agree to compete in these games?
^^ Shortly after HBP was released, I dropped out of fandom . . . pretty much completely. I figured that if I was forced to write, I would be able to get back on the proverbial horse. Plus, I don't really 'know' anyone in HP fandom. I don't speak to anyone in particular (via IM or anything) and I rather think I'm kind of under the radar. I read my F-List and people keep talking about meeting others in the fandom and their fandom friends and I never really had any of those in HP, so I figured this would be a good opportunity to get out of my shell and meet new people. So . . . um . . . Hi, new people! ^^v
2. Why did you choose the Angst Team?
*giggles* I write angst. Trying to write anything to the contrary is very difficult. But in all seriousness, I enjoy writing angst more than anything else. I think that there is the greatest potential for growth, self realization, and development in conflict and--I suppose because I tend to internalize--angst seems to me to be an important part of conflict. Anything else doesn't hold my attention for very long, really. >.>
3. Have you always been interested in the Severus Snape/Harry Potter dynamic?
No, actually. When I started in fandom, I was an adoring Sirius / Remus shipper and a HUGE fan of the father-son dynamic between Sirius and Harry. When I ran out of good fics to read in that category, however, I found myself gravitating towards Snarry. Who was I to blow against the wind? I can't say that there was any fic that made me stand up and say "ZOMG, teh Snarryness of it all!! *_____*" but Walking the Plank (the old version) and a looooooot of free time during the summer of 2003 were critical to my increased interest.
4. What is more challenging to you – working WITH strict canon or working AROUND strict canon?
Hmmm . . . Odd as it sounds, I picture writing as weaving a tapestry. Characters, places, events and everything else are all just threads for the loom and the end product--the plot--is the complete weaving. I think it's because I kind of have this global view of the way I write that I see canon as neither a booster nor an obstacle. The fact of the matter is that in strict canon, you simply can't work. The only person who can work in canon is JKR because she is the source of canon. Because of that, all fanfiction is a deviation from canon. I think that canon sets the guidelines. Any way you slice it, Severus Snape is a vicious, snark, greasy bastard. I think it is the mark of a good writer to incorporate that into their piece and still make everything work. Canon is not something to be surmounted, but rather the framework of fan fiction.
5. What motivates you?
Motivates me to write? I don't really know. It's cathartic, I think. When I don't write for long periods of time, I tend to become snappish, depressed, and restless. I feel unhappy and anxious. Writing make me feel better and gives me something to show for my time.
6. Do you have plans for (or are you already writing) original fiction?
^^;; No. Original fiction rather scares me. Too much responsibility, I think. Plus I tend to be very possessive and protective of my characters. I would bristle at someone else potentially using or abusing my own kids.
7. What three things are necessary for you to enjoy a story you are reading?
- Coherent plot.
- A mastery of basic spelling and grammar and / or a good beta.
- Good, substantive writing. >.> Making Snape the seeekrit Prince of the Veelas who is also desperately in love with Harry Potter, makes flowery confessions on bended knee, and slays Voldemort with one sexy look is NOT good writing. ... And I am quite adamant about this. ><*
8. What are your Top 5 favorite fanfiction stories?
In Snarry? In no particular order:
All I Crave is a Normal Life by cazgirl
Pledges by Amireal
One Warm Beautiful Thing by Minx (really, anything by Minx just floors me. I have mucho love for her work.)
Aqua Fresca by stellahobbit (just copy and paste what I said about Minx.)
Unnatural by Lexin and Tidmag
9. Do you have a story (any fandom) you've done that you are most proud of? Would you link it here for us?
It's actually a tie between 3 fics: Chasing God (for Digimon 02), Residency (for Yami no Matsuei--if you read this one, PLEASE mind the warnings; it has very disturbing content), and of course my pride and joy in HP: The J. Alfred Prufrock Arc's Where the Heart Moves the Stone.
10. Are you excited about the Games?
^___^ Of course! I wouldn't be in them if I wasn't. Both teams look quite formidable and I think some truly fabulous fics will be produced. I'm really looking forward to seeing how everyone responds with their fics and what the readers think.
Thank you, vain!
