INTERVIEW # 14
Original poster: snarrymod
Your Name (and lj name, if different): AbstractConcept the_con_cept
Your Team: Team Romance
1. What made you decide to agree to compete in these games?
I wasn’t sure I’d be up to the challenge, but djin7 has been really great to me, and her participation in naughty_newyear made it that much more enjoyable, so I really wanted to give something back.
2. Why did you choose the Romance Team?
*laughs* That was djin7’s decision, actually—as she put it, “Dude, only your humour can be put up against someone like Amanuensis!” Not that my writing even approaches the caliber of Amanuensis, but it was a lovely compliment, all the same. *g*
3. Have you always been interested in the Severus Snape/Harry Potter dynamic?
Absolutely. Their contentiousness alone made them fascinating, and I absolutely love all the contrasts—their ages, their houses, their social status—as well as the things they have in common, such as their stubbornness, temperament, and the fact that they’re both so easily aggravated with the other. I think there’s nothing more exciting than two characters with that kind of chemistry working off one another. And such a fertile ground for snark!
4. What is more challenging to you – working WITH strict canon or working AROUND strict canon?
Well, I like to stick to canon as much as possible, but there are times when I deviate, particularly in crackfic. Crackfic calls for pulling the essence of the character or plot, but manipulating it to get a completely different tone than the books, so it’s challenging in its own way.
5. What motivates you?
My readers. Every story I write, I feel like I’m giving a gift, and there’s nothing so wondrous to me as finding out how it’s received. Did I make someone laugh? Did I brighten their day? Did I titillate them, or make them groan at an especially goofy pun? What would they like from me? The discussions I have with the people that review and the feedback I receive makes me want to be a better writer, so I can give them something better each time.
6. Do you have plans for (or are you already writing) original fiction?
I have in the past, and phoenix_fiction (aka ShadowPhoenix of Embers and Ashes) and I have been considering doing something together. I’ve been getting bored with the fandom, so something original might spark my love of writing again, too.
7. What three things are necessary for you to enjoy a story you are reading?
Good grammar and spelling are an absolute must. But characterization is the most important thing for me—do I care about the characters? Do they entertain me? Do they stick with me after I’ve finished reading? They’re sort of the foundation for a good story, in my eyes.
8. What are your Top 5 favourite fanfiction stories?
Um, I don’t know if they’re my top five, but here are some of my favorites:
*Fine Lines, by Phoenix_Fiction
*If That Mockingbird Won’t Sing, by Aspen
*In the End, by Anise_Anise
*Irresistable Poison, by Rhysenn
*Seven Things That Never Happened at Hogwarts on Valentine's Day, or Maybe They Did, by Pru.
(Also, anything by DementorDelta, Auctasinistra, Amanuensis…okay, I’ll shut up now.)
9. Do you have a story (any fandom) you’ve done that you are most proud of? Would you link it here for us?
Wow, I don’t know if ANY is a particular favorite. I become unhappy with most of my fics pretty quickly after I’ve written them, so to be honest, I detest a lot of them at this point. They’re fun while they’re being made, and then after that they’re more of an embarrassment. I guess I’ll just pick something representative of my ‘humor’ (if you don’t mind my rather pathetically goofy sense of humor)—Harry Shakes His Booty is something that I liked at the time.
10. Are you excited about the Games?
More… nervous right now. I’m still struggling with my story, so until I feel confident about that, I think I’ll continue to be slightly queasy. ; )
Thank you, and good luck!
