INTERVIEW #40, Mad Science Chick!
Original poster: djin7
Name: madsciencechick
Team: Romance
~ ~ ~
1. What made you decide to agree to compete in these games?
Curiosity, and a bit of a challenge to myself. I love Harry/Snape art, but there's a lot of Snarry fic out there I haven't been able to finish because it trivializes or fetishizes the elements of their relationship that are problematic. I think Harry/Snape is a difficult pairing to work with, but when it's done well, BOY, is it ever done well, and I thought, what better place to see something done well than the Snarry Games?
2. Why did you choose the Romance Team?
I signed up for both. I'm bi-genre-ual! I'm very excited that the luck of the draw put me with the Romance crew, though, because we've had an awesome dynamic from day one in the community, and my toes are tingling with excitement over all the fics currently bubbling and boiling away! Oh, the agonizing, tantalizing delight of being an alternate...
3. Have you always been interested in the Severus Snape/Harry Potter dynamic?
Well...I can certainly say I've always been interested in their dynamic in canon. Snape is one of my favorite canon characters. Fandom-wise though, I don't, for the most part, follow particular pairings, although I do think that the Harry/Snape dynamic can spin out some very hot, tense, satisfying fics. I guess it's just that - like Harry/Draco and Hermione/Snape - the amount of Harry/Snape that's total crap can be kind of overwhelming, so I don't tend to read Harry/Snape unless a specific story is recommended to me.
4. What is more challenging to you – working WITH strict canon or working AROUND strict canon?
I don't know that I really draw a distinction. I don't think it's possible to write a believable story that ignores or trivializes something that's major in canon. I think the challenge is to use those events in a way that ultimately becomes constructive to your story, even if they might seem to make your story impossible at first glance.
5. What motivates you?
Honestly? Feedback. I'm a complete feedback whore. I also am a bit like a dog with a bone when I get an idea I like - I just can't stop gnawing on it until I do something constructive about it. And I'm a little bit impossible to be around when I'm in the gnawing stage.
6. Do you have plans for (or are you already writing) original fiction?
Yes. I'm working on a short story that's part slapstick, part romance, and part speculative fiction, and I've got two novels that are currently on the back burner while I finish that up.
7. What three things are necessary for you to enjoy a story you are reading?
I have to be given a reason to believe it. I don't usually like PWP unless it's set in the universe of a meatier fic, because, while I am willing to believe just about any pairing possible, I have to be shown the way in which it comes about. I also absolutely hate the second-paragraph flashback - you know, when an author decides to give us six years of backstory in the second paragraph of the fic, to summarize how it is that Snape and Harry came to be living together in Texas and raising sheep. It's lazy storytelling, and it's completely jarring to me as a reader.
8. What are your Top 5 favourite fanfiction stories?
Oh, boy, that's hard. I hope these aren't limited by pairing. Probably:
Close Enough, by helenish (Harry/Ron, NC-17)
The Fourth Year, by caligryphy (Harry/Snape, NC-17)
Sweet Home, by copperbadge (Remus/OFC, Remus/OMC, R)
Transfigurations, by resonant8 (Harry/Draco, NC-17)
Roman Holiday, by coldcoffeeeeyes (Hermione/Draco, Hermione/Snape, R)
9. Do you have a story (any fandom) you've done that you are most proud of? Would you link it here for us?
Oh, sure, twist my arm. :) Advent, Remus/Sirius, Marauders era, R.
10. Are you excited about the Games?
Is the Pope Catholic? Does the sun rise in the east? Is Daniel Radcliffe hotter than any sixteen-year-old has any right to be?

Thank you, madsciencechick!
