Interview # 8
Original poster: snarrymod
Your Name: Rakina
Your Team: Romance
1. What made you decide to agree to compete in these games?
I was desperate to join in. The chance of joining a team with established writers of some of the best Snarry around couldn’t be missed. I put my name into ‘the hat’ but had little hope of being chosen: normally I can’t win an argument. There were loads of authors wanting to join in (understandably) and the odds were against me.
You can imagine the adrenalin-rush of pure joy when I saw my name had been picked.
Now, I hope to justify my place, and I feel the pressure is very much on me as one of the randomly-picked authors to try and match the standard of the invited team members. (Fat chance, LOL)
2. Why did you choose the Romance Team?
Ideally, I wanted to be on Team Romance, because my beta hel_bee was an invited member. She told me about the Games and suggested it would be a good idea to ‘shift my arse and put my name in the hat’. So, as her wish is almost invariably my command, I did so. And I like writing romantic Snarry.
The whole concept of the games had grabbed me by then, so I was willing to go into Team Angst if I couldn’t be in Romance, because I’m quite capable of applying a bit of suffering, as well as smooching.
3. Have you always been interested in the Severus Snape/Harry Potter dynamic?
Oh yes, Snarry is my OTP without doubt. It’s matchless in its dynamic of cynical older man and impertinent young upstart. There are so many types of plot that will work with these two, from slapstick comedy to grand tragedy and everything in between. The flow of stories will probably be constant, at least as long as people want to read them.
4. What is more challenging to you – working WITH strict canon or working AROUND strict canon?
Who thought up these questions? That’s a nasty one. Hmmm.
Well, with strict canon is difficult because you have to keep checking you’re staying within the boundaries. Get it wrong and someone will soon pick you up on it.
Around the canon you’d think would be easier, and of course if you just want to go off and make up your own version of the Potterverse, transplanting the boys to your local school or something, that’s easy to do, but is it believable? So working around canon can be difficult if you want to keep Harry and Severus in character and in a believable magical setting. All fanfiction can be called AU, because it’s not canon and never will be, but I do like to stick to the spirit of JKR’s creation if I can, and use the historical sources of her inspiration as well.
5. What motivates you?
Oh Lord, that’s a good question. I’ll have to go away and think about it. In 40+ years I’ve never really found out…
6. Do you have plans for (or are you already writing) original fiction?
I have a plan that’s just a skeleton, not fleshed out at all. I’d like to have a go, but really, I enjoy Severus and Harry so much, my own creations would seem pale beside them. For now, I’ll stick to what I’m doing, especially as I’ve only been writing for about a year anyway and need more practice.
7. What three things are necessary for you to enjoy a story you are reading?
Firstly, it’s got to be readable from an English point of view (the language, not the country). If I meet too many errors too quickly, I give up, even if the plot appears promising. If I meet another Voldermort I’ll be likely to loose my mind, so to speak.
Secondly, the characters have to be recognisable. Their speech and behaviour patterns must resemble the canon originals, particularly at the start of a story. Events change people, so a certain amount of changed behaviour convincingly developed is okay.
Thirdly, the story has got to make you want to see what happens next. So it has to have a good, gripping plot if it’s in several parts.
Oh, and it doesn’t have to have sex – that’s just the delicious icing on the cake.
8. What are your Top 5 favourite fanfiction stories??
Cambiare Podentes: Invocare by jordangrant.
Courtship Rituals by meri
Dumbledore’s Folly by dementordelta
If You Are Prepared by cybele
A Nick in Time and its sequel Growing Pains by Tira Nog.
9. Do you have a story (any fandom) you’ve done that you are most proud of? Would you link it here for us?
Now this is a real headache-inducer. I tend to be most enthusiastic about whatever I’m writing at the moment, which would link you to my WIP on my LJ, The Marked Man.
But not everyone likes WIPs, so I’ll say: As Clean A Piece Of Smut As You Will Ever Find
10. Are you excited about the Games?
Is the Pope a bear?
Does a Catholic shit in the woods?
No, I’m not excited, I HAVEN’T STOPPED SQUEEEING YET.
Thank you, and good luck!
haha. Thank you rakina!
