INTERVIEW # 4
Original poster: snarrymod
Your Name (and lj name, if different): Beth H. (bethbethbeth)
Your Team: Team Romance!
1. What made you decide to agree to compete in these games?
Honestly, I was a little wary of these games when I first heard of them because I'm uncomfortable with competition amongst fans. But it quickly became clear that while the organizers were taking the challenge seriously, they were taking a very lighthearted approach to the competitive aspect of the games. That - plus getting to participate in something that brought more Snape/Harry to the world - sold me.
2. Why did you choose the Romance Team?
I almost had to toss a coin to decide (I like angst), but...oh, come on. Look at Snape. He's miserable enough already. The man needs a happy ending.
3. Have you always been interested in the Severus Snape/Harry Potter dynamic?
Heh. This was...um...the pairing that almost kept me from getting involved in the fandom in the first place (I seem to recall the words "Are you out of your mind?" crossing my lips more than once), but once I was forced at wandpoint to actually read some Snape/Harry (The early stories of Telanu's "Tea Series" were my gateway to this fandom), I caved in immediately.
4. What is more challenging to you - working WITH strict canon or working AROUND strict canon?
Are these really two entirely different categories? I mean, if my second option had been ignoring strict canon, then I wouldn't have had to think twice about choosing "working with strict canon," but it's great fun sometimes to see how far you can stretch canon events without negating their reality entirely.
5. What motivates you?
Hmm...I could fall back on the cliche that there are stories inside me that have to be told, but I don't think that's exactly it. To be honest, I suspect that a lot of what motivates me where writing fanfic is concerned is simply that it's the best way I know of contributing something to "my community" (i.e., fandom) at the moment.
6. Do you have plans for (or are you already writing) original fiction?
Not really. Not while I still have stories to tell about these already-existing characters. The only time the subject of writing original fiction ever really comes up is when I visit my family and my mother suggests that maybe I should "write something real" (Yes, my 70 year old mother reads my fanfiction. Scary, isn't it? *g*)
7. What three things are necessary for you to enjoy a story you are reading?
This is actually an extremely difficult question because sometimes I'm willing to ignore all my standards if a story just happens to come along at a time when I need that particular pairing or scenario. Generally speaking, though, I want to see:
(1) a reasonably tight adherence to canon, except in the case of certain humor pieces. I can forgive a lot from stories that make me laugh.
(2) A strong focus on something, regardless of whether that something is romance or adventure or character study or whatever. I've been driven a bit crazy recently by a few long stories that started out brilliantly, but which lost the point of the story in a damp basement of endlessly mushrooming subplots.
(3) Snape. Okay, that's not entirely true. About 15% of the stories on my recs page (see below) don't feature Snape at all, but I am nowhere close to knowing enough about Snape's life.
8. What are your Top 5 favourite fanfiction stories?
May I direct your attention to the Harry Potter section of my multi-fandom recs page. Over 300 recs in slash, het, and gen fanfiction. However, at this precise moment the first five six Snape/Harry stories that come to mind are:
