To keep the community active while our Team Members are busy writing and plotting and I KNOW that's what you are doing for our Games in April, I am going to be posting interviews with each team member. Here you will find the answers to such questions as their favourite stories, what motivates them to write, why Snarry? and more!
Your Name: Rex Luscus (rexluscus)
Your Team: Angst
1. What made you decide to agree to compete in these games?
I wanted the chance to hang out and work with a lot of Snarry writers I admired! My only regret is that I could only be on one team.
2. Why did you choose the Angst Team?
While I enjoy reading everything, I'm pretty much an angst writer. I'm just better at making characters suffer than at making them happy. I actually think upbeat romance is harder to write than angst, because happiness is boring to read about unless the writer's got skillz.
3. Have you always been interested in the Severus Snape/Harry Potter dynamic?
I got into HP fandom after HBP came out, and within a few days of checking the Internet to see what was there, I was deep into Snarry. The scenes between Snape and Harry in the books were always the most compelling scenes to me, though, even before I got the urge to read or write fanfic.
4. What is more challenging to you – working WITH strict canon or working AROUND strict canon?
On the Kinsey scale of canon purity (0 = canon nazi, 6 = what's canon?) I'm probably about a 2--when both reading and writing, I want things to stay as close to canon as they can and still permit what I want to happen (i.e. Snape and Harry get together in some capacity). But I see fanfic's raison d'etre as being to stand in opposition to canon as an alternative viewpoint, rather than to fill in the gaps or serve as an unofficial extension of it. I'm not quite sure if that answers your question or not, but that pretty much sums up my thoughts on the subject.
5. What motivates you?
In life, or just with respect to fanfic? :) In fanfic, it's just a desire to get inside and explore the characters--well, primarily the character: Snape. I want to know all about him, and the only way to do that is to read/write him. I like him with Harry best because Harry gets to him in ways that other characters don't, which brings out his vulnerabilities and all the other stuff Snape works so hard most of the time to hide. Harry is Snape's emotional achilles heel and that’s why I find their relationship so compelling.
6. Do you have plans for (or are you already writing) original fiction?
I've done a bit of it in the past but nothing serious, and I have no plans to do so in the future. I'm in graduate school right now and am looking at a future of writing literary criticism for a living, so the fanfic is a nice, enjoyable counterpoint to that.
7. What three things are necessary for you to enjoy a story you are reading?
Well, let's bracket "good writing" and "recognizable characterization" since that's probably true for everyone. For one thing, the story has to be focused primarily on the characters and their relationships, rather than the plot. (Heh, I'm such a girl!) Not to say I don't enjoy a good plot, just that a story that's all plot and no characterization is of no interest to me. Second, it has to have conflict--real conflict, not just "my friends don't understand why I love Severus." If Snape and Harry are getting along perfectly and their love is a mystical transcendent union of souls, I can't read it. Third, the dialogue has to sparkle. I think many Snarry fans are like that--we love the repartee. This might seem to fall under my bracketed category of "good writing" but it's more than that--I hold the dialogue to a higher standard than the rest. It can make or break a story for me. I'm also prejudiced toward a witty Snape and an always-one-step-behind Harry, for the most part.
8. What are your Top 5 favourite fanfiction stories?
Hm! Probably, let's see…"A Choriambic Progression" by Mairead Triste and Aristide (Snarry), "In Between Days" by atrata (also Snarry), "A Soft Place to Sleep" by caligryphy (Snupin WIP), "Misericorde"> by fabularasa (Snack) and "The Last Good Year" by atdelphi (Snapledore). Agh, there are other things I adore equally to these, though…"The Miseducation of Severus Snape" by Not Exactly Dickens (Snack), "Adagio" by xochiquetzl (Snupin), "Habit" by Snegurochka (Snupin), R&D by Busaikko (Snupin), "Truth" by thisveryinstant (Snarry), "Whate'er Therein Is Promised" by deeble (Snermione)…but you said five. Damn.
9. Do you have a story (any fandom) you’ve done that you are most proud of? Would you link it here for us?
I'm probably most proud of my Snape/Lupin/Harry fic that I wrote for the 2005 Snupin Santa fic exchange for cs_whitewolf. It's called Wormwood (NC-17) and it's the story I put the most energy and effort into--primarily getting the Snape/Harry dynamic worked out to my satisfaction. I'm also starting to feel good about some more recent efforts, though. When I finish a fic, usually I hate it initially and then grow to accept it, like some animals do with their young. :)
10.Are you excited about the Games?
Absolutely! I can't wait to read the stories from both teams, because I know they're going to be just amazing.
Thank you, rexluscus! Look for more coming soon!
