INTERVIEW # 28
Original poster: snarrymod
Your Name: Snakeling
Your Team: Romance
1.What made you decide to agree to compete in these games?
I plead temporary insanity. It's probably the only reason why I agreed to participate in a fest with such a short deadline when I was already writing another fic :)
2.Why did you choose the Romance Team?
I wasn't sure I would be able to write angst convincingly, so romance was the only possible choice, really.
3.Have you always been interested in the Severus Snape/Harry Potter dynamic?
Oh yes, from the start. I got pulled into HP fandom by a Severitus fic, discovered Snarry soon after, and the love has never waned. I've branched out a little, but in the end, I always go back to those two.
4.What is more challenging to you -- working WITH strict canon or working AROUND strict canon?
Now that's a trick question. Generally speaking, I prefer canon to AU, and I would have said that writing with canon is more difficult than writing around it. You have to keep everything, even the parts you don't necessarily want. But I've began writing an AU story a few weeks ago, and boy is it more difficult to write than I thought. I want to keep it close to canon, while deviating in some obvious ways, and I'm fighting with that story every step of the way.
5.What motivates you?
My friends, definitely. I came here for the fics, and I stayed for the people :) They provide me with hugs when I need them, advice, kicks in the ass, inspiration... And there's always someone with a nice word for when I need it most.
6.Do you have plans for (or are you already writing) original fiction?
No, not at the moment. But I won't say never.
7.What three things are necessary for you to enjoy a story you are reading?
1. Reasonably good grammar and spelling. I have and will trudge through a badly spelled and written story, because the plot is interesting, or whatever, but I won't enjoy it.
2. Reasonably IC characterisation. I can't believe in a schmoopy!Snapeor a weepy!Harry. Gratuitously!homophobic!Ron tends to annoy me, too. That said, I can believe everything, as long as there's enough internal motivation for the characters to act as they do.
3. At least a passing nod to cannon. I don't mind resurrected!Sirius (or Dumbledore), but I'd like either an explanation why and how, or an AU warning in the header.
8. What are your Top 5 favourite fanfiction stories??
You expect me to choose only 5?! Okayyy.
1. Cambiare Podentes by jordangrant: It's like crack, and I'm addicted.
2. Contemporary Magical Innovations by kaiz: The story's structure is very clever, and I love the descriptions of non-wanded magic.
3. Sanguis-Vinculum by meri_oddities: The forced bond is one of my favourite
plot tropes, but it's so very rarely done right. Meri takes the time to develop the relationship, and at no moment do we go, "WTF? Snape/Harry would never act that way."
4. The Life Debt by rushlight75: I love chan, especially when dubious consent turns into enthusiasm. Mmm, Stockholm syndrom :)
5. Scratch by aucta_sinistra: I like it when stories set while Harry's still in school take the outer world into account, especially when Dumbledore isn't a twinkly-eyed matchmaker. And there's a cat!
There are many, many more, but those are among the stories I re-read often.
9.Do you have a story (any fandom) you've done that you are most proud of? Would you link it here for us?
The story I'm proudest of is probably Life and Death.
It was a nightmare to write. I had about 5,000 words written, but I grew dissatisfied with it, so I scratched them and began again, then Ook worked me like a house-elf to improve parts of it... But I'm really pleased with the end result.
10.Are you excited about the Games?
Oh, yes! Scared half to death that what I write will turn out to be horse dung, but that's the fun of it :)
Thank you, snakeling!
