INTERVIEW # 22
Original poster: snarrymod
Your Name (and lj name, if different): bar_bar_ella (anal_cram_ink for those who know me better by that journal name)
Your Team: Team Romance
1. What made you decide to agree to compete in these games?
I almost didn't, due to shyness and social anxieties, but having been invited (and among such impressive company, too!), it was too overwhelming to deny, really. I'm sure this is going to become a huge, much-loved standard of the Snarry fandom, and the chance to be involved in the inaugural event was just too special to pass up!
2. Why did you choose the Romance Team?
I like to make sure those who should be together end up together. :)
3. Have you always been interested in the Severus Snape/Harry Potter dynamic?
That's what the Potterverse is all about, isn't it? *shifty look* Seriously though – yes. It's what hooked me and reeled me in. I'd never read the books, only seen the movies and I was quite content with that, just following Harry's story through the movies as they were released, I had no desire to read the books at all. Then, in July 2004 my world changed! Heh. By sheer accident, I happened upon juliatheyounger's "Sunrises", I fell MADLY in love with Severus Snape and set about reading everything I could that had him in it – eventually even having to go out and buy the damned books so that I could get more of him. I often feel like writing JKR a letter saying "I bought your bloody books because of SLASH, lady!". :D But yeah, Snarry has every beautiful element of high drama, high romance and high comedy for me. They come alive when they're together – even in canon. If only they could get over their grudges and realise just how much they have in common, what a formidable force they could be!
4. What is more challenging to you – working WITH strict canon or working AROUND strict canon?
With, I think. I don't like going around the canon too much – not really much point, as far as my particular fandom interests are concerned.
5. What motivates you?
To write? I think George Orwell put it rather well when he said "Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand." Heh.
6. Do you have plans for (or are you already writing) original fiction?
I've been getting published since 1987 (short stories, poetry, articles, interviews, prose pieces, novellas) and I've completed three novels I'm still pimping about. I'm constantly writing, it seems at times. It can be a royal pain though. But, er, short answer is yes. :) It's what I do.
7. What three things are necessary for you to enjoy a story you are reading?
Character-driven, accomplished writing technique, sparkling dialogue. Not askin' for much, am I? *snerk* I like stories in which the characters, their conversations, their thoughts, their actions and their settings all ring true.
8. What are your Top 5 favourite fanfiction stories?
Sunrises by juliatheyounger will always, always, always have the most special spot in my heart because it really did lead to some amazing changes in my life and my writing. :)
Also, in no particular order…
So Lonely Without Me by calligraphy.
A True Hero by pitchblackrose.
Aqua Fresca by stellahobbit.
In Between Days by atrata.
Catching Fire by the_con_cept.
(yes, I just named 6 – I'm a big lousy cheat. *grin* And I only did Snarry, too! I didn't even try to wrangle some twincest in there!)
9. Do you have a story (any fandom) you’ve done that you are most proud of? Would you link it here for us?
I'm very proud of all the stuff I've written in the Potterverse, actually (and it's the only fandom I've ever written in – The Boy Who Lived A Bit was the first fanfic I ever wrote, ever!). I'm quite proud of the WIP I'm writing at the moment. But probably The Profile is the one thing that I feel came out exactly how I wanted it. I was really pleased with the dialogue in that, too, and the fact that I was able to get it done so quickly and out to the public within two days of the release of Half-Blood Prince. I got up the next morning to find more than 80 lj comment notifications waiting in my email. That was pretty amazing, I gotta say. :)
10. Are you excited about the Games?
Terrified, actually. Remember those social anxieties and shyness I mentioned earlier? :)
Thank you, bar_bar_ella
