Team Snitch Entry (ART): "What Would You Do for Love?" by Plantinshadows
Title: What Would You Do for Love?
Artist: [info]plantinshadows
Team: Snitch!!!
Genre(s): Gender Bender and/or Crossdressing; Literary and/or Historical
Prompt(s): Love and Marriage
Rating/Warnings/Kinks: PG; none
Artist's Notes/Disclaimers/Thank you to Thanks to El Capitan and her continuous encouragement!! I intended an old, sepia-look (that’s why Harry doesn’t have green eyes), though I’m not quite sure I quite got the look I hoped for....I have a summary under the cut for the story I wanted to tell.
Media used: Watercolours, coloured pencils, a bit of Photoimpact
Archiving/Usage permission, including the Tribute Video (only after the polls have closed and medals have been awarded): Sure

*Dial up users beware of multiple images under the cut*

Summary: What would you do for love? Would you give up your identity to be with the person you love? Would you give yourself to them, knowing that you’re wholly dependent on them? That’s what this picture story is about. Lord Snape is urged by his friend, Lord Malfoy, to find a woman to marry. By chance, he instead meets Harry, a bookshop owner, and there is an instantaneous and amorous attraction. But this is nineteenth century England, where homosexuality is forbidden and women have no rights. Conflicted, Snape returns to London, but Harry's friend, Hermione, finds him there and convinces him of a bold plan where Harry would disappear and give up his whole life so the two of them could be together. In the end, Harry gives up his rights as a man, his identity, and masquerades as a woman. After their wedding, they retreat to a country estate to live in peace.

What a tale of love's sacrifice! The art is just gorgeous; you really portrayed Snape's distress so well, his frustration at not being able to have the one he wants, stymied by the morals of the times, and my favorite panel is the one where Harry sits with his wedding dress, thinking over what he's about to give up and become, for love.

The poetry text on the panels is so well-chosen too. Both you and [info]gingertart50 laid it out so well--how literally impossible it was for same-sex couples in that century. Nailed those genres and prompt, too, Snitch! What a classy entry!

I want to echo Joanwilder and Shadowess. That scene with Harry weighing his decision with the dress laid out - wow. So much dramatic power there.
I loved that you shone a spotlight on this point in history.
(and I love the warm rich tones as well!)

Well done!

Such a sad story in one way, yet wonderfully hopeful and satisfying in another.

Your depiction of this was done beautifully, with truly lovely touches. I particularly like the scene where Harry's name is entered in the Register as having died. Having the hand pause over the page was such a clever, gentle way to have drawn Harry's momentous decision.

Very, very impressive, fellow Snitch!

What a beautiful story and art! Every panel conveys such passion, anguish and conflict, even that which has only hands. The palette is warm and lovely, I love Harry's blushing cheeks. Hermione is so lovely: her leaning posture and reaching arms, and her face. So much to love and stare at. Harry and Snape are both beautiful (love Snape's hairline and ponytail), and the clothes are really gorgeous. Perfect quotes, too.

Oh, I really love the story here. It's shockingly powerful. The intensity of the hopelessness and the difficulty of the decision really comes through.

And your art is really lovely here. The details are especially well-drawn. I especially love Harry's wide eyes in the kiss and the look the two share in the final panel. Gorgeous!

Oh who can resist such romance? This is wonderful. The quotes in olde archaic language add so much atmosphere, and tell the scope of what Harry is truly willing to sacrifice for love. *swoons*

The color palette is wonderful, as well, evoking those wonderful illustrations in turn of the century romances.

Very nice work!
