TEAM MEMBER INTERVIEW # 40, Rex Luscus!
Original poster: snarrymod
Your Name (and lj name if different):Rex Luscus rexluscus
Your Snarry Games Team: Romance (teamromance_art)
1. What made you decide on Team Romance?
It was tough, because usually I am a big fan of the angst. I was on Team Angst in the Winter Snarry Games, too. However, I decided in the end that I'm much better at drawing romance than angst. I also wanted to see if I could go all-out and do a really epic, Wagnerian romantic Snarry piece, because ordinarily, the emotions in my art tend to be somewhat muted.
Mod note: Rex was Team Angst Captain in the 2006 Winter Author Games, and won a Silver medal. You can find her most excellent story here: Contrapasso.
2. Which HP character is your favourite to create in art?
Oh, Snape, without a doubt. I draw him compulsively. I'm always revising what he looks like in my mind. He's endlessly fascinating!
3. Has your experience in fandom changed the way you do art? How?
I'm sure it must have, but I'm not sure how! What really transformed my art was getting a tablet earlier this year. I was suddenly able to do things I would never have been able to do otherwise. Suddenly, my pieces could match what was in my head, which gave me enough confidence to start posting them.
4. Do you prefer drawing your own scenarios, or drawing scenes from canon?
My own scenarios. I don't usually have much narrative in my drawings; it's either a portrait or two characters in a steamy clinch. I'm not especially comfortable with backgrounds. J The piece I'm doing for the Games is the most story-heavy thing I've ever done, and it's driving me nuts!
5. What made you decide to draw fanart the first time? Which fandom was it?
I first drew fanart for X-Men. That was relatively intuitive since X-Men is a comic, and thus I could crib from the comics themselves! I always enjoyed comparing different artists' interpretations of my favorite character, Nightcrawler, and then coming up with a version of him that combined what I liked from their versions. Simply studying a lot of comic art also shaped the way I draw now.
6. Who is your favourite fandom artist?
Oh gosh. I don't know! I love yukipon, mneomosyne, lizardspots, fiendling, ac1d6urn...those five are probably tied for my favorite.
7. Have you ever been inspired to draw fanart for a fanfiction work? Why?
Sure! I drew a scene from "The Waltz Continues" (a Snupin story by Busaikko) because I loved the scene so much. I always read scenes and want to draw them, but usually the drawing is too ambitious and I give up. J I'm dying to draw the climactic scene from "Cheat" by Snegurochka; one of these days, I'll do it. I also want to do a series of Snape portraits based on the Snapes from my favorite fics--because they're all quite different, and I think it would be fun to see how that could be conveyed visually.
8. What are your favourite mediums to work with?
Non-digital? Pencil and charcoal. I love drawing from life with both of those media. But for fanart, I vastly prefer my tablet and Photoshop, because it's much easier to produce a finished-looking piece that way. My charcoal drawings are always a mess. Maybe an interesting mess, but still a mess. With my tablet, I can get something approaching a polished illustration.
9. Do you have a piece of art (fandom or original) you've done that you are most proud of? Would you link it here for us?
I'm probably most proud of my Snarry piece, Moonlit (NC-17). But I am working on a Snape portrait right now that will probably replace it as my favorite thing I've done. Usually, whatever I've completed most recently is what I'm most proud of.
Mod says: That portrait can now be found Here NC-17 NWS.
10. Are you excited about the Snarry Games?
Of course! I've been looking forward to it for months! I'm going to be delirious when all the finished pieces start going up.
Thank you, rexluscus!
