The lapping of waves against the rocks and the rustle of leaves were Severus' only companions as he walked the shore of the Black Lake. His throat was still raw, inside and out, and his hands trembled slightly in the aftermath of Nagini's ruthless attack. Sunlight filtered through the marauding clouds, briefly illuminating the shores, as though rays of hope reaching out to him.
Severus snorted at the direction his maudlin thoughts were taking. Potter's eternal optimism must be contaminating him. Even now, the young wizard should be pleading his case in front of the Wizengamot, although Severus had told him not to waste his breath. There was a cell in Azkaban already prepared for him, Severus knew, and with his luck, it would be the flea-ridden one Black had once occupied.
The squeak of a shoe alerted Severus to the approach of his self-appointed champion. Turning, Severus just managed to catch the boy as the slick leather of a sole slipped on a rock, causing Potter to stumble. Severus was surprised as Potter clung to him, resisting all efforts to set him away.
"You've been exonerated and restored as headmaster," Potter said huskily, looking up at him with a poignant expression.
Holding the green eyes, Severus watched as the pupils dilated with – could it be – desire.. Slowly he arched an eyebrow.
"I appreciate your efforts on my behalf, Mr. Potter, but nothing comes without a price. What is it you want from me?"
The boy's voice dropped to a whisper, edged with something Severus couldn't quite identify.
"I'd… I'd just like you to pretend to actually like me for just a minute."
Resisting the temptation of the up-turned face and full lips for a split-second, Severus gracefully gave into the attraction that had plagued him since the Forest of Dean. The brush of his lips against Potter's drew a needy whimper from the young man, enflaming Severus, who proceeded to thoroughly acquaint himself with Potter's mouth.
Lifting his head, Severus smirked at the dazed look on Potter's face, very aware of the lithe form pressed flush against his. Somehow, one of Severus' hands had found its way around to splay the slender waist, while the other cupped the tousled head, and still Potter pressed closer. The green eyes grew calculating.
"What do I get it if I tell you I managed to get an Order of Merlin for you?"
