Alstromeria wrote a note in a bottle and threw it into the ocean. She made a new friend later that day as a boy came walking up the beach to talk to her. He had just moved to the area and was out exploring. They hit it off so well, she decided to take Jimmy home to meet her Da. Her Da was a little abrupt and strange with Jimmy, like he'd seen a ghost, and scared him a little by pushing away his fringe as if looking for something.
Da calmed down though, and turned away and gruffly told them to go play and so they ran off and didn't see him go into the forbidden drawer and take out an old newspaper clipping.
So, Jimmy decided to bring his new friend home to meet his Dad who's the best Dad in the world (except maybe for Alstromeria's Da when he's feeling OK, because he's kind of sad a lot). And Jimmy doesn't know why but Dad was kind of startled when he saw Alstromeria, like he'd seen a ghost! He kept touching the little bottle he wore from a string 'round his neck when he thought they weren't looking. But he was very nice to her and they talked a bit.
Later, when Alstromeria got home, her Da was sad again. He was looking at one of those old bits of paper and it looked like he hadn't moved for hours. But he looked up when she came in and she tried to make it OK for him. It's just him and her, though, and it's hard.
Later, perhaps many days later, her Da got sick and it scared her because he was having one of his nightmares but she couldn't wake him up and couldn't wake him up. So she put on her shoes and ran all the way to that nice Jimmy Potter's house and asked his father if he could help. He came right away and he helped so much! But he was a little strange when he saw her Da, surprised and kind of sad, like he knew something she didn't. But he cast a few spells and Da's nightmare stopped and his fever went down and then he was just sleeping and it was going to be OK. She didn't notice that nice Mr. Potter left a bottle on the table when he left.
Da noticed it though, when he woke up. She was sleeping so she didn't see him reach out and touch it like it was a figment of his imagination but inevitable as the tide. Later, Da asked her what happened and she told him all about Jimmy's nice Dad and he asked her to take him to their house so she did, chattering all the way.
When they got there, Mr Potter and Jimmy were laughing over something and looked so happy, but they didn't mind being interrupted one bit. Da was uncomfortable, though, like he was intruding or maybe like they wouldn't like him. He reached out to touch Jimmy's Dad, but stopped short, and then Mr Potter took his hand and pulled it to his cheek! Like that was a signal, Da suddenly pulled Mr Potter into a hug, clinging to him like a drowning man.
Alstromeria and Jimmy were surprised, but that's OK. Her Da's a lot better now. Even though no one answered her letter in the bottle. That's OK too, she doesn't even remember that now that they've got Jimmy and his Dad.
...Er, well I don't know why I started channeling Alstromeria (well, I do, her POV was compelling), but that's roughly how I interpret it. XD
And later on, that last picture? Is a wedding picture for the grown kids. :)
