CHAMPION INTERVIEW # 9 - Ships_Harry!
We welcome another veteran back to the Games:

Your Name: Scarlet, or [info]ships_harry
Your Team: Phoenix. Ka-boom!

1. Which HP character gives you the most trouble to draw?

Anyone minor - if I don't have some kind of personality for them, I can't really get into it. Even with a throwaway back-of-head shot in a Daily Deviant Angelina Johnson/Mme Edgecombe pic I drew, I had a back-story worked out for them as a couple :).

2. What was the first fandom you ever produced art for?

HP. Am drawing n00b. ~waves~

3. Has your experience in fandom changed the way you do art? How?

Yeah, for sure. For starters, fandom actually got me drawing at all. People are so positive about experimentation and willing to provide feedback that it makes me want to try new approaches, new styles; just to play around and have fun, knowing that doing it purely for me is gonna make someone else happy too :). Occasionally something in fandom will lead me to be a bit contrary, too.

4. In a Snape/Harry/(Your team's Mascot) cage match, who wins?

The cage, hands down. The Phoenix would spontaneously combust, Snape's hair would catch fire, Harry would be all distracted trying to Save The Day by putting it out, and it'd just be a mess.

5. What are your favourite mediums to work with?

Sybil and Cassandra Trelawney?

~cough~

Sorry. Er. I like to draw using a computer and graphics tablet. I'm complete arse with natural media.

6. What do you consider your strongest talent? Your weakest?

Hrm. I don't think I'd consider it a talent, as such, but I think I'm sort of unafraid of… stuff. Styles and subject matter. Though apparently not that articulate :p.

Weakest... time management. So I'm often doing the important detail work at the end without enough time to do it properly, and things can look softer than I'd like.

7. Is there a piece of art that you think is your absolute best so far? Would you link it for us?

I'm torn between some. No, shut up, this isn't ego, it's indecisiveness. I'd actually really like to link to a collaboration from December, but the image links are broken in the original post and the OP no longer has access to the asylum to edit them. Argh?

None of these are work-safe.

There's a really recent one, not on my own journal yet, Down to the River, Charlie/Snape, just because I loved working with the subject matter (ELEPHANTS WHEE) and was pleased at how naturally the kinda diptych thing of it came together.

My HD Cup piece, Price of Fulfilment, was pretty cool in the end. Some words floating about there. Harry/Draco

And Choked, from Wankfest, with Regulus. Quite wordy. Very mildly implied unrequited Sirius/Regulus.

8. What (or who) inspires you in Fandom?

Interactions with people, new approaches, exciting ideas, tricky stuff. Getting into a mad feedback loop with someone where we feed off each other and go nuts, and then editing that back into something workable.

9. Fanfic writers often say the best compliment they can get for their stories is unsolicited fanart. What would you consider the highest form of compliment for your fanart?

Feedback where it's clear that something about the piece has interested someone enough that they want to talk about it. Whether they're all, wow, omg, I love that idea, or if it's really exacting concrit, I love it when I've somehow pulled something out of the hat that's caught someone's attention in some way.

Though "omg yay squee!" is love also : ).

I mean, given the structure of the question, I guess it'd be a gimme to say that unsolicited fanfic would be the best compliment… but that can actually make me feel a bit uncomfortable; probably because I so often draw with a solid story in mind, even if it's not one I ever write down.

I'm terrible about that sort of thing. Slight control freak, with a tendency to be all, "oh my god, that is NOT what he was thinking!" - which is bloody hilarious, given the fandom thing :).

10. Are you excited about being in the Games this year?

No, I fall asleep every time I so much as think of it :p.

Thank you, [info]ships_harry! Stay tuned for more Champion Interviews, and some Opening Games surprises!
