Team: Phoenix!

A/N: First, thank you to the mods for creating the Games in the first place and for having the patience of saints. [info]leela_cat did a phenomenal job with this in a ridiculously short time. Whatever coherence the fic has is due to her heroic efforts and hand-holding. Also thanks to Team Phoenix for putting up with my fumbling captaincy and for helping to make this an enjoyable ride. Lastly, many thanks to my beloved [info]rinsbane for talking me through to the images I needed. I wish this were a better first offering, my dear.

*With gratitude to [info]leela_cat and apologies to T. S. Eliot.

I'm crying right now. I cried through out this fic -- it took me almost 12 hours to read this thing but I loved every minute of it.

I think this is the best Harry characterization I've ever read in a fic -- he was so different than in the books, but still the same.

Snape was wonderful -- Ron broke my heart. I sort of hated Lupin and Tonks.

I - I don't know what to say. This was amazing. I'm reading it over again, especially that first sex scene. Wow!

Wow, your story took me a while to read, but this was akin to a TEN minute orgasm. *G*

*just stands there with hands on hips giving you that look* Okay, this is a PRIME example of why you should be writing more fic. And fic. And fic. And fic. Dayum, chick, you take nothing lightly. This was sheer and utter brilliance, but really, I could expect nothing less from a woman that leaves feedback that puts most fics to shame.

SUBFUCKINGLIME.

I just finished listening to this fic this morning; I make MP3 files of the longer fics to listen to during my lunch walk and daily commute.

I have no words to describe how utterly wonderful this fic is, from start to end. The plot, the delicious sex, the hopeful ending...I love damaged characters and you certain gave me everything I love. And the end - the just HAVE to get together.

If I say this is the best fic of the fest, it sounds like I don't appreciate the other writers. They are all doing fantastic jobs too, and they have all been wonderful fics in their own ways; but this one is just special to me. I know I've missed things because of the way I 'heard' it, but I also get different things because of taking it in that way. When I catch up on all the other fics (have about 12 more to go), I'll be printing this one out and reading it this time. I know there are things I'll catch the second time around.

Everyone pretty much has already commented on the highlights so I won't repeat what they've said. But I have to say, the sex scenes are the hottest around and I'll for sure be coming back to read just them several more times.

Great job.

This was possibly one of the most amazing pieces of fanfic I've ever read. Beautifully, beautifully, beautifully written. The world you create is amazing, your use of magic is absolutely phenomenal. I literally could not stop reading.

And your description of Ron's death and the aftermath of grief it produced was just heartbreaking. And so very real.

Thank you so much for this fic. It just blew me away.

I can't bear to finish this story! Last night I awoke at 3am and read til 430, to the moment when Harry started a spark of fire in the house, and I thought "Oh, Shit! if I keep reading, I will be up the rest of the night." So I backed up a few pages and read on the train this morning, thru their apparition to the riverbank and back, up to Snape saying : "Together."whenthe tears streaming down my face blurred my vision and I arrived at the office.

"Allergies" I explained with a wan smile. So now I have to pretend I really care about what I am working on, and wait for lunch.

How much do I love you, and them, and this fandom right now? I can't possibly quantify. A few days ago I was all happy from a de-aging romance where Our Boys were able to make happy choices. And that was perfect. And this is perfect, too, how incredibly torn up, scarred and damaged they are, magically, emotionally, and how much they are entangled with each other in their 'healing' - even if it be healing into death.

Hovering on the edge of the finale, I could almost forgive you if you killed them. I suspect you won't.
I tell you, I will never look at roses the same way.

I started this at dawn and it's now noon. The sink's full of dishes, the bed's unmade, and who cares? Reading this made me feel like I'd traveled back to a time when Snape/Harry was still a wonderful new discovery.

What a story. The curses and wards were just amazing (and so convoluted, original and unpredictable that I had to reread a few passages in order to keep things straight) and the OCs were both so interestingly drawn that I'm a little disappointed that they're not part of canon, because I'd kind of like to see more of them.

And oh, your Snape and Harry, how perfectly they were characterized. And not just their voices, which were perfect, but also your descriptions of them, especially of Snape. "The black billowing sweep of their passage had increased Snape’s menace by a magnitude of nightmare, endowing him with the kind of negative charisma not often granted to skinny, bitter men.", in particular, delighted my socks off.

Sorry to be so longwinded here; it's just been a while since I've been so transported by a story. It even had my favorite ending- lip-wobbly, but with a spark of hope. Thank you so much for a delightful reading experience. I envy your talent.

Good lord. I have goosebumps now from just finishing the story. I'm having trouble stringing words together at the moment, but that was one of the most intense fics I've ever read. I got so sucked into the world/universe you created that I read on until I realized it was dark outside. This is a brilliant piece of work, and so hauntingly real in its depiction of human emotion.

Awesome. Your story shows why Snarry is so absolutely perfect, in so many ways.

Your writing is excellent. Not one of your 80k words is wasted. In fact, I wasn't even aware of the length of the story while reading. It was over all too soon. Your story-telling is like magic; your metaphors become real, filling the story with beauty, but also with intense emotions, a combination that will haunt me for a long time.

I love your dark Harry, who's all the more intense and vulnerable. And your Snape is one of the best Snapes fandom has to offer, right up there with Atrata's and Telanu's: Fierce, dark, complicated, ugly and nasty - an absolute pleasure to read!

Thank you for showing me that AUs are possible! You bring me right back to the wonderful days of hate-passion Snarry. Your fic shows me that we simply can choose and create the best of all worlds. Yay for freedom!

And then, this is scorchingly hot. Snape letting Harry come all over his face and telling him to lick him clean - that's all kinds of wonderful.

Simply stunning! I hope you're going to write more Snarry in the future. (Even if you don't, this is so outstanding, you are one of the best Snarry authors already. *g*)

Gorgeously written - I'm especially in awe of your deft hand with metaphor throughout. I love the way you describe Voldemort's ghosts and sins haunting of Harry and how you kept Snape very believably thorny all the way through. Lovely characterization of him.

I really like the beautiful imagery this story creates, especially at the beginning when Snape was pinned to the wall with the white rose petals floating down around and turning red from the blood. Very powerful work. Grand descriptions and I really like the way Harry and Snape interact. As well as the magic you create and how the other characters are throughout the story.~Sophia

That was an absolutely awe inspiring experience. I am now in the unenviable position of having to decide which fic gets axed from my top 10 list because When the Rose and the Fire Are One is now officially in that very small handful of fics that I love beyond reason. There are actually only 3 or 4 that I love almost beyond endurance, and this is one of them. Jesus wept.

You said in your comment responses to Dracofiend, It's melodramatic and rather disjointed - the word that persists in my mind when I think of it is ungainly. Emotionally intense but not artistically . . adept? Um. The right word will come to me eventually. It's not elegant. It's like something that's been turned inside-out, so that all the flaws and organs are on display. (This isn't me fishing for reassurance, btw; this is me thinking aloud about what's missing from this fic. About that most elusive of qualities, whatever it is that separates raw storytelling from art) and I need to tell you that, while I understand the sentiment, you're wrong and obviously not the best judge of your own work. I know what the feeling's like, I think. I experience it (that feeling) as having an idea in my head that is as clear as an Ansel Adams photograph, with all the textures and exquisite detail, but which on the page is more like a family snapshot taken with an Instamatic. I'm telling you, your fic is full on Cibachrome, baby. Exquisite (and I keep coming back to that word in my head) detail and clarity. Yeah, lots of high flying imagery and metaphor, but none of it wasted, none of it cluttering And not ungainly in the least. There's a certain, I don't know what word I want, abruptness? That's not quite right, maybe it's what you see as disjointed, but if you hadn't said anything, I would have assumed it deliberate, because it completely suits the story being told. It amplifies the anger and the territory of emotional minefields. You see flaws, but those of us not in your head don't. Have you ever looked at a sunset in the mirror? Where the reflected image seems somehow more real than the reality? That's what Cibachrome is like; that's what your fic is like -- that incredible vividness, sharpness that makes you hold your breath in wonder. And I did, as I told you in my email, forget to breathe several times during the course of reading.

I read fast. Gobble up words on a page. But sometimes, rarely, I read something that makes me stop dead and go back and reread, slowly, savoring the way two words are strung together perfectly. At page 6 I stopped and, though totally enthralled, I forced myself to go back to the beginning and start over. I could taste the atmosphere. I could feel Harry's ghosts, feel Snape's shredded skin. *shivers* I could feel the flames and smell the smoke and roses.

And the sex was smoking. And the not-sex was smoking. The moment when Snape unbuttons his collar and pushes his stringy hair over his shoulder was so sexy I honestly had to laugh. One-handed reading even when sex was not happening. *g*

I love your vision of both Harry (angry!Harry brings me pleasure, and somehow, relief) and Snape (greasy sex on a rose thorn, plus you know, bitter. Really, really bitter in a very real, honest way. God, fuck me! Snape as sin-eater. I almost died from the horror and the love.)

Each Games seems to have one fic that, for me, stands out above all the rest. This year, you own these Games, and I am totally fucking in love with you.

Shit, I suck at critical thinking and commenting and smoking a bowl while writing comments probably doesn't help. Someday I want to sit and talk to you about Snape and Harry. I mean really chew them up and spit them out like watermelon seeds on a hot summer afternoon.

I'm so blown away by this story I'm a little lost for words. Suffice to say I LOVED it, and was completely captivated and enchanted. The symbolism is incredible, most obviously of roses, and fire and ghosts, and collars and chains. Too complex and *epic* to describe, but the sheer intricacies and interconnectedness, and the final key to unlocking it all - it fit, it made perfect sense. Which brings me to Harry. There were times I truly disliked him in this story, and others that I loved him and respected the inherent hero he is. So complex, so crazy, I still don't know what to think, but at the end I empathized and understood, and despite his very real flaws - loved him all the more. Brilliant characterization. Your Snape is the Snape of my dreams. Enough said! :) (Except to add, you hurt him so much, I still feel bruised). Those scenes between Snape and Odile, and young Snape in the photo made me smile. I think I hurt more when his photo burnt than all of what happened to Ron. I feel like I've been on a wonderful epic journey, a true fairytale of light and shade, love and torment, courage and honor, and I loved it.

Best of this year's fest, thusfar. I don't say that lightly. In fact, I don't lose my ability to craft coherent feedback lightly either, so please infer from my babbling, the highest of praises.

I could wibble, but you've broken my heart too many times, and I'm all wept out. So you'll have to settle for stunned verbosity instead.

I hope you're proud.

Absolutely perfect! The emotions are as cataclysmic as they should be in an Alternate Universe and the imagery of the white prison guard roses drenching this drab little city house, crawling like eyeless snakes over Snape versus his mother's red and gold roses that won't bloom if he doesn't bleed (and they're the Good Roses! what a life that boy has led!) is so vivid and disturbing and luxurious, it's like a fairy tale . . .

All the details are so tellingly orchestrated-- when Harry disapparates with Snape out of the house at the end, it's back onto the same littered bank next to the canal he apparated to at the beginning -- and you shift gears so gracefully. After Ron's beautiful, gut-wrenching but oddly serene death and funeral, it's wonderful to have Odile come waltzing back (God is she marvellous! I want the name of her manicurist!) teasing Harry about Snape eying his arse like it's a lamb chop.

Actually, now that I think about it, all the scenes with Ron were such a perfect counterpoint to what's happening with Snape -- Ron's tragic in such a different way from Snape (and it's pretty marvellous to see Ron being the tragic hero for once) plus it gives you little breaks when you can actually sympathize with Harry.

And GOD, the way you describe Snape's/Rickman's voice -- venomously soft, like a ribbon around Harry's heart -- and how you make the whole progression from Harry wanting to wake Snape with a Sectumsempra through coming on Snape's leg from basically just kissing not just believable but indecent, lewd and beautiful! It's so erotic, which is somehow rarer and more precious than sexy.
Although, I have to admit, when they're finally fucking and Harry says "Just don't get too far away." and Snape replies "I wasn't planning on it." That's pretty much the sweetest thing ever!

Wow! This was really an epic work. Sorry it took me so long to comment. I really admired the beauty of your descriptions. The idea of Snape feeding those roses his blood, from the time he was a child really haunted me, but the moment when he explains it to Harry made me a little teary eyed.

I really admired the narrative, and I thought you did a great job showing us a haunted Harry, and his return to character when the ghosts disappear. What a fantastic ending! I love the open-endedness of it all.

Thanks for the lovely story!
