I found myself in a predicament after Book 7, namely, I didn't want Snape to die, but as someone who takes canon as a whole (including the Epilogue :p), I had to reckon with what happened in the books before I could think about venturing into the world of AU. Hence this story, which was both a challenge and a joy to write.
I didn't worked out all the technicality of Snape dispersing parts of himself inside his memories; I see his motivation as wanting to hide anything suspicious from Voldemort. This means he hid away everything that was remotely good about him, leaving only the vicious, nasty Snape for all to see. Harry seemed satisfied with just knowing that Snape wasn't a Horcrux, so I took advantage of writing from Harry's POV and left it at that ;)
