TEAM PHOENIX ENTRY: CruiseDirector "A Pastoral Interlude"
Title: A Pastoral Interlude
Author: [info]cruisedirector
Team: Phoenix
Genre(s): Romance
Prompt(s): Career Change, Time Capsule
Rating/Warnings/Kinks: R; Mild adult language, fairly discreet offscreen sex. Drag mouse over space if you wish to know more: *Past-tense minor character death.*
Word Count: ~12,000
Summary: On an unhappy Christmas Eve in Somerset, Harry finds the last person he expects to see cooking in the kitchen of an inn.
A/N: Betas: The wonderful [info]dementordelta and the amazing [info]celandineb.
Disclaimer: Some ideas for recipes came from Maxime de la Falaise's Seven Centuries of English Cooking, though I borrowed mostly lists of ingredients. The King's Arms Inn is a real place in Shepton Mallet, but to the best of my knowledge, wizards must make reservations there the same way as everyone else.

I personally think the prequel would come first, so that the readers know what Snape and Harry are up against if Snape takes on tutoring James. Then any trials that developed between the three would have an explanation. We'd also learn all the details of what brought Harry to being at the restaurant in the first place. I can't really see Snape wanting to take on the responsibility of teaching James without all of the information he could possibly get. Snape's a planner and doesn't like being surprised, he would wish to avoid any complications that would arise. I would also think that Snape would insist that Harry tell him everything as part of the deal in teaching James.

I'm definitely looking forward to further stories about the trio :)

It would be interesting to give Snape both Harry's and James's versions of what happened because I bet there are some serious differences. (I'm trying to decide whether James had a crush on Teddy or was just entranced by the idea of power...could see it either way and he's not telling me at the moment.)

Oh yes, different viewpoints would be fantastic! It's sort of how differently the Snakes and Lions see things, or anyone looking at any given situation would see things differently.

I'd wonder why James helped Teddy too. It could be that they were like James and Sirius, just doing it to see if they could get away with it. Or because they were searching for something they were missing in their lives. I'd liked to know why Teddy would want to create a Horcrux anyway? Just because it was Dark Magic and they wanted to see what Dark Magic could do? It's sad to think about something bad happening to Teddy.

I never liked Tonks and Remus together, but then I don't really think Remus would have been paired with anyone unless it was someone closer to his own age and wiser than a scatterbrained, ditzy, stalkerish type auror like Tonks. Remus deserved someone much better than her IMHO.

I think Teddy had a much bigger hole in his life than James, but James had a bit of a complex about being the son of the Chosen One, someone he could never hope to exceed in anything except things that don't interest him much like herbology. Teddy wanted to create a horcrux to make himself invincible; his parents were killed, he'd grown up hearing stories of the martyr Fred, he didn't see any glory in death for a cause or for no reason at all. And James wanted to prove that he could do it too, though once he realized exactly what was involved, he balked.

I could have liked Tonks and Remus together if it had been based on something, anything they had in common -- bodies that transform, a passion for the Order, whatever -- but as far as I can see, she was just desperate to be luuuurrrrrved and he spent most of his time panicking and running away from her! (GAY GAY GAY oops.)
