More FAQs - Fanon and romance and angst, oh my!
IMPORTANT PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT.

We take a break during our regularly scheduled programming to bring you some new FAQs!

This Games, we have the new and very popular genre of Fanon being voted upon by our judges. This has prompted some interesting questions.

1. FANON: How do I vote if I haven't read the story that the artist has chosen to draw from?

There are several things you can choose to do:

  1. You can read the story, then vote.

  2. If you can't/don't wish to read the story, you can vote highest marks for "Fanon" (9), giving the artists the benefit of the doubt.

  3. You can SKIP the question.

This leads us to our No. 2 question:

2. Do I have to answer every question in the poll? What if I'm not certain how to vote?

You do NOT have to answer every question.

We tabulate and average each individual question for each poll. This means an average out of whoever DID vote on that particular question, not on all three. We do this because we have always recommended that you skip a poll question that you do not feel you are able to answer.

For many people, the question of how 'Romantic' or how 'Angsty' a picture is can cause the same confusion. For the record, we again post the definitions from the 2006 Games:

2a. What, exactly, is ANGST? How can I vote for it?

Angst is a German word which means "anxiety" or "anguish". Technically, this is a term used in Existentialism which expresses the dread reality that the future is an unknown chasm; therefore, the choices that a person ( the existent ) makes are the determining factor in the outcome of one's future - thus, the cause for "angst." German Angst was borrowed into English with the same meanings as it has in German: 'fear, dread, anxiety, anguish'. It's related to English anger, anxiety, and anguish through Latin angor 'anguish, strangling' and angustia 'tightness, distress'. No wonder we feel a shortness of breath when we have these feelings, and they say that anxiety is just repressed anger.

In *literature*, it primarily means putting the characters (and by extension, the readers) through deep emotional and possibly physical pain (characters only for the physical pain, hopefully).

There are different levels of angst, and it can be subtle as well as extreme. When you vote for 'How Angsty' a particular submission is, you should take into consideration your particular preferences, and know if they are subtle or extreme, and then vote as fairly as possible. Your voting on 'like overall' will determine whether or not the angst was to your tastes and levels.

2b. What, exactly, is ROMANCE? How can I tell if an entry is romantic?

There are endless definitions of Romance:

- a soulful or amorous ideal
- expressive of, or exciting, sexual love or romance;
- A fictional mode in which the chief characters live in a world of marvels (naive romance), or in which the mood is elegiac or idyllic and hence less subject to social criticism than in the mimetic modes. The general tendency to present myth and metaphor in an idealized human form, midway between undisplaced myth and "realism."
- marked by the imaginative or emotional appeal of what is heroic, adventurous, remote, mysterious, or idealized
- having an inclination for romance : responsive to the appeal of what is idealized, heroic, or adventurous b : marked by expressions of love or affection c : conducive to or suitable for lovemaking

There are also different levels of romance, and it too can be subtle as well as extreme. So again, when you vote for 'How romantic' a particular submission is, you should take into consideration your particular preferences, and know if they are subtle or extreme, and then vote as fairly as possible. Your judging on 'like overall' will determine whether or not the romance was to your tastes and levels.

3. How do I change my vote, once I've committed?

It's easy, just find the entry in question, click on the Poll # (i.e. Poll# 499, Team such and such member...), then click on the "Fill Out Poll" button, and it will bring up your old answers. Once you've edited them, you must remember to "Submit Poll" again.

4. I don't have an InsaneJournal account. What can I do?

There are many things you can do - comments and reviews are most welcome here. We allow anonymous comments, so feel free to squee, just remember to sign your name! You can pimp! Let other Snarry (& fanart) lovers know via mailing lists, archives, other journalling services & blogs. Unfortunately, you do require an InsaneJournal in order to vote.

Thank you! We will go back to our regularly scheduled future Snarry Art classic in a couple of hours!
Have fun, and enjoy the Games!
