Inheritance Laws - Harry Potter
On Harry's twenty-first birthday, he signed for his Black inheritance - with a blood quill. A betrothal contract, binding the Black heir to a dead man, appeared in his hands.
On his twenty-second, at midnight, the unfulfilled contract exacted punishment. Vertigo drove him to his knees. Spikes of pain fried his nervous system.
The ordeal was repeated for an hour every day; except his birthday, when he endured twenty-four hours of agony.
After eight tormented years of unsuccessful research, three children, and a divorce, only the improbable remained. Appearances to the contrary, the Prince heir lived.
Remorse tasted of ashes.
Inheritance laws - Severus Snape
The scroll materialised in mid-air and dropped onto Severus' toasted teacake. He swore. Muttered spells cleansed the parchment and banished the contaminated remnants of his breakfast.
Severus' lips twitched with amusement. Trust Potter to be the only Black heir who reached twenty-one without being disinherited or murdered.
Twelve months later, Severus scowled at the Prophet. The misbegotten whelp had dared to marry the Weasley wench.
He tapped the contract's blood-red seal with his wand and initiated the punishment cycle. When the green-eyed brat finally succumbed, Severus would lead him a merry dance... to the altar.
Success would taste sweet indeed.
