The scarred hero prowls the moon-striped halls of Hogwarts, haunted by the screams of the dying and the stench of the battlefield. So many had depended upon him, so few lived beyond his victory. Harry sends errant students back to their beds with the distant affection of a much older man. They no longer remember the Gryffindor lion shining with optimism.
He leans against a cold wall and whispers a name. Only echoes reply. The dungeons hold abandoned dreams, dry and hollow as the shed skin of a basilisk. Shaking back the silver-streaked mane of his hair, Harry paces away.
