Motherhood...
Characters: Debi, Junior
Status: complete
Debi shifted in place and waited for the computer to connect. Mrs. T had had some work done on the building this week, and that meant no Internet for the last few days. The web master at Remus' publisher had taken over the rjblythe.com server while she was on maternity leave, thank goodness, but it was still a pain not to be able to connect to her American friends.
Junior cooed and rubbed her eyes, and Debi melted the way she always did when her daughter did something adorable. Right now she was experimenting with baby wearing as an alternative to keeping Junior in her crib while she did housework, cooked, or worked on-line, and so far it wasn't bad. Iaina was calmer when she was snuggled safe against her mom, and breastfeeding was easier, at least at home. It was also easier to run errands than toting around a heavy baby carrier, or waiting until Zach got home to rush out to the store. It wasn't perfect (what was?) but as long as Iaina was small enough that her weight wouldn't send Debi straight to the chiropractor, it was all good.
Even better was being a mom at last. Even with the sleepless nights and the (fortunately brief) bout of mastitis and the poopy diapers, Debi wouldn't have traded places with anyone. Junior was changing by the day, sometimes by the hour, and Debi sometimes found herself spending hours just watching her baby sleep. It wasn't easy, oh no, but since when was "good" supposed to be "easy"?
The computer pinged, and Debi exhaled as the little plug-in graphic finally connected. She'd IM'd on her cell phone a bit with Kristy (who had agreed to be Junior's godmother, or whatever the equivalent was for Wizarding babies - and just how were babies named, and was there a church she had to join, or what?) but that was about it, and it wasn't a surprise to see several hundred messages in her in-box.
"Let's see what we have, sweetpea," she murmured, absently leaning down to kiss Junior's downy little head. "Lots of advice from other mommies, some pictures from your Aunt Kristy, press releases about your Uncle Remus's next movie - oh yuck, I have to think of something else, he won't appreciate being 'Uncle Remus' - reminders from Mommy's post-natal fitness class, an e-mail from your Grandma telling us when she's coming to visit, a letter from your Aunt Cath - "
Debi froze. Mum was coming HERE? She'd specifically told Mum that no, Iaina was far too young to travel so far and that Thanksgiving or Christmas was a lot better, but she'd never ONCE invited her mother to visit! What the -
Debi -
I'm glad to hear that Iaina is doing well. You seem to be taking this much better than I thought you would, although I must warn you that the weight doesn't come off easily. She's a dear little thing, odd name or no, and you sound very happy.
You'll be pleased to know that I've firmed up my travel plans and will be arriving next week for a short visit. Fortunately Dawn found an excellent discount plane ticket web site so I'll be able to see my newest granddaughter before she's out of diapers....
Debi stared at the screen. Next week? The house was a mess, she was still pudgy, she owed visits to Padma and Serenus and Remus now that Junior was old enough to go outside, the spellbooks and milk-inducing potions were in plain sight, she hadn't managed to use up all the old Prophets because of course those could only be dropped off in Diagon Alley not in the regular recycling....
She hugged Junior close and tried to figure out the best way to warn Zach. Somehow, "Honey, my mother is coming and we are so totally SCREWED" wouldn't quite cut it.
