It was far from the most eloquent response, but it was the best Regulus could do after listening to Barty's story. He mulled over what he had heard, sifting through it and trying to decide how much he could trust what Barty had said.
Fact-checking with back issues of the newspaper would be easy enough, and there was also the matter of Barty's surprise when he'd walked in and seen Regulus in the shop. His shock had seemed too genuine to be an act, and while there was the possibility that Barty was a good actor, Regulus' instincts told him that Barty had been as surprised as he'd appeared to be, which meant this wasn't a trap.
He, of all people, understood what it was like to seek redemption and to try to carve out a new life, and if Barty was indeed sincere, then as one second-chancer to another, Regulus thought he ought to give Barty a chance.
If Barty lied to him and betrayed him... Well, there were some artifacts in Regulus' collection that - while not illegal - could be used for unpleasant purposes.
"You need to know that Bellatrix kidnapped me and attempted to turn me into an Inferi," he said at last. "Thus I cannot immediately trust without reservations anyone who once associated with her as closely as you say you did. However, I do know how difficult it is to start anew after making grievous mistakes. For that reason, I will give you a chance if you want it."
He moved closer and held out his hand. "You're hired."
