The Great Disappointment
Characters: Debi, Padma, a jar of Nutella and a green marshmallow peep Status: complete
"It's all right, Debi. False alarms are common, especially for a first baby. Don't worry, it won't be long now!"
Debi dipped the peep into a jar of Nutella and stuffed it in her mouth. She'd spent two miserable hours being checked and monitored at St. Mungo's, and for what?
"False labor. What the hell is that supposed to mean? 'Contractions that hurt like hell for no reason?"
She rubbed her stomach, which was as round and big and heavy as ever, and told herself that it was silly, wanting to cry. She'd have her baby soon enough, and a year from now she'd be laughing over this. But right now she felt like an idiot, panicking everyone for nothing even though Zach and Healer Abramowitz had told her she had nothing to apologize for.
At the very least she could apologize to poor Padma. Debi sighed, propped a tablet on her belly, and began to write.
Dear Padma -
First, thank you so much for helping me yesterday. I really did think it was time, and I'm glad you were with me. Lunch is on me next time, I promise!
Second, do you have any books on baby care? Most of the ones I have are for Muggles, but based on what I've heard from friends with kids, magical babies can be really, really different. Put them on my tab and owl me what you think would help - I'm going absolutely nuts here by myself!
Thanks a million for everything. Hope you're well -
Love, Debi
She whistled for Jane, sealed the letter, and sent it off. Hopefully Padma wouldn't notice the faint odor of chocolate and hazelnut on the paper....
