Twilight turns from amethyst to deep and deeper blue
Characters: Neville
Summary: Thoughts after a long, long day...
Signing the last of the renewal contracts which had needed his attention, Neville let out a long sigh and leaned back in his deck chair, the rusted metal frame of which groaned in protest. It had been a long day, and Neville massaged his temples as he tried to sort out his thoughts. It's been a long month, he corrected himself, as everything that had happened assailed him again now he was no longer concentrating on plant orders.
He wasn't sure if he was relieved or not that his involvement in recent events had been marginal, but one thing was sadly for certain, he was being given a front-seat view of the fall out. First he had discovered Barty Crouch was alive and well, then Luna had lost her mother for a second time, and now Faelan had lost Sirius.
Neville pinched the bridge of his nose. They had all lost Sirius, but having already resolved his feelings for the man, Sirius' death had not hit him as hard as seeing the effect his death was having on those around him. His own mourning had been tempered by having already comforted Luna over her mother, and by the hot pain and anger he felt whenever Crouch's name was mentioned in the papers. He felt bad that it was so, but though Sirius had meant a lot to him, his family and his need to protect that family meant more.
However, it was exactly his instinct to protect his family that was breaking his heart where Faelan was concerned. He knew that Faelan accepted his friendship, but he could only hope that the boy knew just how much he was prepared to do for him. Faelan had become as much a part of his extended family as Mrs Bramley had before him... just as Draco had.
Letting out a huff of breath, Neville glanced down at the contracts, signed by Draco and then sent back via owl. It would have been good to have Draco here this past month, even if it had just been to hear his ironic take on events. "I hope you're enjoying yourself," he murmured. "I miss you."
Thinking of Draco brought Sirius sharply back in focus, and Neville swallowed thickly as he remembered the day he had first approached Draco on business and how Sirius had winked at him when he had entered the house.
Suddenly hit by the grief he had been reasoning away, Neville bent over his desk. Resting his forehead against his folded arms, he absently hoped that his tears didn't blot the contracts.
