It's fine to see you
Characters: Sirius, James
Summary: James returns to the house looking more substantial
Sirius was sitting by the window, reading a letter, when the door opened and shut. He turned, expecting to see Faelan or Harry or Regulus -- Gaius was out -- but instead, there was James, walking across the floor with a jaunty click of shoe heels against the floor.
"James?" he said stupidly.
"Hey," James returned casually. "Something wrong?"
"No." Sirius stuffed his quill in its holder and stumbled to his feet. "No. It's great." Grinning widely, he threw his arms around James and thumped him on the back, and James laughed and squeezed him back, almost painfully hard.
"Lily?"
"Her too. We talked to Harry. I don't know why I didn't earlier." James shrugged casually. "Not sure how it would be, I guess."
"And that was it?"
"Yeah. Lily reckons that we needed to accept our place here before we could take it."
"As his parents."
"Including that, right."
Harry must have liked that, Sirius thought. "Good, then." He sat again, tilting the chair back to watch James -- real, solid, James, with the wall he was leaning against not showing through him. "So, what next?"
"Mm." James pretended to think. "Food." He grinned. "Beer." He straightened suddenly. "You know what we should do? Go out."
"Out?"
"Right. No girlfriends or kids." He threw a charming, mischievous smile that Sirius knew Harry could not have matched with a year's practice. "Not even the ones that aren't."
Sirius raised an eyebrow, but he couldn't quite restrain the first lift of a smile."Oh?"
"Oh, come on, Padfoot. It's not a boys' night out if your lover is along, no matter that he is otherwise qualified. You know that."
Sirius surrender and laughed. "All right. Just us." He cocked his head to the side. "Moony?"
James hesitated. "Just us," he said. "This time." He grinned. "You and me and as many pubs as we can find." He laughed and pushed himself upright. "But not tonight," he said with a wink. "Tonight is for Lily."
