Hallows halls are lined with walls
Characters: Hermione, a force from the Veil
Status: complete. Takes place immediately after this scene.
The door banged shut behind her as Hermione arrived at the Veil room. The sense of energy gathering was strong enough to make her hair crackle as she came closer and closer, and she had her wand out and a protective spell ready to cast as she skidded to a stop a few feet from the Veil.
It wasn't fluttering this time. It was whipping back and forth in the archway, the tattered cloth barely concealing the glow from beyond. Hermione froze in place, almost deafened by wind and muttering that seemed to crescendo as she neared.
"Get out - "
"Back - "
"Body - "
"Shouldn't be - "
"Run while you can - "
"Reunite - "
"Life - come closer - "
"Who are you? What do you want?" Hermione shouted. She'd sent the messages, Tanner at least should have received his by now! She gritted her teeth and aimed her wand at the archway as the glow began to turn a weird, almost sickly red.
"You." The voice was cold, so cold. Something wispy began to float past the Veil. "I know you."
Hermione gasped out a dispersal spell as mist the color of blood eddied toward her. She'd heard that voice before, high and cruel and almost hissing, it couldn't be, he was dead -
"A Mudblood's flesh breathes as well as any other - silly, silly girl, here alone - "
The red mist had surrounded her, encompassing her. She shrieked as the cold began to creep into her brain, her mind, as her wand hand came up and began to cast a spell she had never learned.
"You're not - " She raised her wand over her head as if to obey, then threw it back toward the door with all her strength. Pain exploded along every nerve as she pushed back against the cold. "Get - out - of - my - head - "
"Silly Mudblood, you're no match for me!" The mist was man-shaped now, tall and pale and red-eyed. "No Potter this time, no Prophecy - you'll serve me well - "
Faces swam before her: friends, teachers, colleagues. The coldness started to fade as she thought of everyone who had ever loved her or helped her: Ron and Leila, her parents, Harry, Molly and Arthur and Viktor and Sirius and Regulus and Jack and -
"Not while I love," she whispered, and shoved Lord Voldemort out of her mind and back behind the Veil as the darkness boiled up to claim her.
