In the midst of life, we are in death
Characters: Hermione, a blast from her past
Status: complete
It was a typical March day in London, but Hermione did not care. Today was Ron's birthday, and she was going to go all out to make it special for him.
She was on her way to order a cake (organic flour and organic whipped cream, and incredibly tasty for all that) sent to Ron's flat. She'd also bought a warm scarf and hat in Gryffindor colors for Leila to give her Daddy, knitted Ron a set of gloves to match, and was now wearing her sexiest underwear so they could sneak a few hours of adult time during Leila's nap.
It would be the first time she'd set up a party for him since they'd gotten back together, and she was humming happily under her breath as she walked down Diagon Alley. It would be a lovely day, and -
A man emerged from Quality Quidditch Supplies, and her heart almost stopped.
He hadn't changed a whit: heavy brows, hooked nose, slightly arrogant tilt to his head. And his walk was the same, that controlled, almost rolling gait of a born athlete. His color was good, not the sickly pallor of those last horrible weeks, and she started forward to kiss him hello -
No. No. He's dead, dead twice over, you know that, you're hallucinating -
Viktor Krum looked at her and held out his hand. "Herminonie? You are sick, you must sit down - "
She'd barely had time to register that his flesh was warm, not icy, when she jerked away and staggered back into the street. "No - this isn't - no!"
If there was one thing she believed in, one thing she'd clung to throughout her life, it was the rational mind. And as much as that belief had had to accommodate the Wizarding World, she knew that a vampire who'd been staked would never, ever rise again, let alone shop in the middle of a busy London shopping district.
All thoughts of parties fled as she bolted for the nearest public Floo. Don't think about it, don't think, get to the Squad, Peony said something about this, Lily and James are back, what is going on?
Surely there was a book, or books, that would tell her why or how her first boyfriend had come back?
And if he was back, what was she supposed to do?
