He drew in a deep breath, trying to find a way to describe what had happened without sounding as if he were playing for sympathy or revealing exactly how much it had shaken him. "She murdered an old friend of mine in Cairo and sent me his heart in a box," he said, his voice flat. "The message was clear: returning home won't throw her off my trail. I sent the box and its contents to the Ministry, but whether it will be of any use to them or not remains unknown."
