Who: Klaus and Ben Hargreeves
What: Just five more minutes
Where: Hargreeves home
When: October 6th

He rolled over slowly, grumbling as he pressed his face into his pillow and tried to block out that press of day. He was allowed, it wasn't his day. He shouldn't have to get up first thing, dad wouldn't even notice he wasn't at breakfast. At least that's what Klaus told himself as he laid there in a fit ready to beg mom for a few more minutes when she came to get him up the way she always did.

But the longer he laid there no one came, and Klaus found that he couldn't sleep when he was wondering where mom was to get him out of bed, how unfair was that? He opened just one eye in the direction of the door and then both because this was.... not his room. It wasn't - this wasn't where he was supposed to be.

"Mom?" He called out as he sat up, looking around, it was familiar, sort of, his room, but not his room. He didn't know how to say what it was, but it wasn't home. He pushed himself up rummaging around in a pile of clothes for something to wear and in the end pulled on a robe that dragged on the floor as he pulled it around himself and then peered out the door.

First one way and then the other before he stepped out following the hall down to a room that was Ben's. How did he know it was Ben's when this wasn't their house? It didn't matter, what mattered was Ben. And Klaus pulled the door open and shut it quickly behind him the robe getting caught and tugging him back before he could open it and pull the fabric in behind him and then ran to Ben's bed shoving at him. "Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!"

"Ben!" Klaus pressed again, pushing himself up and onto Ben's bed kneeling beside him and pushing at his shoulders. "Wake up!" He told him again, nothing was right and Ben wasn't even waking up to see how it was all wrong, he was just trying to sleep, the same way Klaus had been before he'd realized that there was something strange about all of this and now here they were in this house that was theirs but wasn't theirs, and Ben just wanted to keep on sleeping.

He made a face, indignant and outraged when Ben asked if it was Christmas, "Course its not Christmas you freak." He rolled his eyes, leaning down over Ben and pushing at his other eyelid to force it open. "It's a robe! We've got bigger problems than my clothes, Ben. Look at me!" He held his hands out wide, as if Ben hadn't already been peering up at him, and really what was there to see, he was still himself, at least he thought he was. But he was sure if Ben looked at him he'd notice something that Klaus hadn't quite figured out yet.

"M'up!" Ben said, even though what was even the point, really, if it wasn't Christmas. Still, he opened the other eye -- even if it was only because Klaus was all up in his space and poking at his eyelids until he did it, and then he slapped at the direction of his brother. "Sttoppp!"

But okay, okay. Bigger problems than clothes. Like what? Music lessons earlier in the day than he wanted, maybe? Ben didn't like music lessons any time of the day, let alone morning. But Klaus wouldn't get too weird about that. Or demand a stare down at --whatever time it was.

He scooted up, the heels of his feet pressing against the --too big? -- bed in order for him to find some leverage, but eventually he made it even with Klaus in the way and his back was pressed against pillows and a wooden headboard that felt a little more like it'd break apart with too much pressure which was new and weird. "Whatcha mean look---?" He asked, but did it anyway. He stared at Klaus, all messy hair and dumb robe that he'd been told to ignore and then tilted his head to the side thoughtfully, curious. "Were you in Allison's makeups?" He asked finally, but knew that wasn't the right question even as soon as he asked it.

There was something going on here and Klaus wasn't totally sure what it was, but what he was sure of was that it wasn't right. Sure he felt like himself, and Ben looked like himself and they both knew what they were about, he just knew something was wrong.

Of course his brilliant plan of having Ben look at him to deduce what was happening didn't really work out the way he'd hoped it would, Ben looked at him and rather than telling him what he wanted to hear he guessed that he'd been playing around in Allison's makeup, which sure he'd done that plenty, but this was serious - sort of. He wasn't sure how bad it was yet, but it wasn't right.

"Look at the room!" He demanded, "This isn't your room." He was sure of that much. "This isn't the house, Dad isn't here. Mom didn't wake me up, no one else is out there." He pointed over his shoulder to the hallway he'd just come from. He'd known then that the rest of their siblings weren't here, just like their mom, and maybe better their dad.

"Of course it isn't," Ben said with a little pout, because it was too early for Klaus to be shouting, particularly at him.

He didn't know why he'd said that though, because all those things were weird. He should have expected his room, their house, Dad. Mom. Smiley face egg breakfast. But he hadn't. And he still didn't, even now that he was thinking about it. He frowned, leaned forward to poke Klaus in the cheek because he was doing that pouty thing and Ben didn't like that.

"No one else is here?" He asked, and it was sort of hopeful.

Klaus made a face when Ben poked at him, but he stopped pouting so that was probably exactly what Ben wanted in the first place. It seemed like what he'd been talking about was finally making it through to Ben though as he agreed that first the room wasn't his. And then questioned that no one else was there.

"No! It's just me and you." Klaus grinned then because that was the sort of thing that never happened at home. And now here they were in a house that was theirs and they didn't have to share it with anyone. "Can you believe it?" He flopped down beside Ben poking his side as he pressed in close against him.

"I looked out there, there's no one. No one is gonna mess with us." Not Diego or Luther or Allison or their dad. They could do anything they wanted. "This is gonna be amazing." Now that they were on the same page about it all Klaus was kind of giddy over the possibilities.

So it was just him and Klaus. No Dad or Mom or anyone else, not even Vanya. Ben considered that for a moment even as he squirmed and doggy-piled on top of Klaus, looking around the room without actively having to get up and do so. Man, there were a lot of books. And some other pretty interesting stuff too. It wasn't too messy but it wasn't neat either and it felt pretty comfortable.

"Huh," he said after a second of thought. "And you said it wasn't Christmas." But this felt like Christmas. Because it was kinda a gift to be left alone to do whatever they wanted instead of following Dad's sometimes boring and hard and some times really scary schedule. Nothing bad would happen to Klaus, and Ben wouldn't have to let the monsters out.

It was

awesome.

"What should we do?"

Okay maybe he'd been wrong, maybe it really was Christmas, or something like that. "Maybe it is," He allowed as Ben pushed himself up to look around the room to see what Klaus had seen already. "I should have asked for something like this last Christmas." He hadn't thought wishing for something like this would work, he'd wished plenty of time that he didn't have to have those one on one days with their father, that they could just go to the movies, or to the park like normal kids did, and none of it ever happened.

But here they were now, just the two of them together.

Yeah.

It was awesome.

"I wanna look around, there's a lot of stuff out there," He pointed back toward the door, "Maybe there's something good to eat?" He suggested too, something better than the kind of regular breakfast they had at home all the time.

"I don't think you would have got it," Ben said, poking at Klaus' cheek again because that was his new favorite past time, maybe. He didn't know why. He just liked being close, and that was reason enough for now. "The house is never empty." Not like it was here. Even now, in his room, there was no stomping in the hall or running. No giggling coming from Allison's room. It was just quiet.

Well, beside the two of them. Klaus was never really quiet.

"Kay," he agreed, sitting back and rubbing at his nose with the palm of his hand. "Explorin. That's fun. I want pop-tarts." Eggs and bacon had gotten boring.

"Probably not," Klaus agreed, huffing as Ben poked at him again, but he didn't bat him away. He liked that Ben was close, that they could lay like this and Ben could touch him. It was fun and it was comforting having Ben like this, especially with everyone else gone. "Guess Christmas came early then, you were very good this year." Klaus teased, devolving into a giggle fit over it like he'd made a particularly great joke.

It was quiet in the best sort of way, mom wasn't calling them to breakfast, he didn't have to hear Luther trying to pretend like he was in charge and keeping them in line, it was just him and Ben and Klaus loved it.

"Do you think we have pop-tarts?" He wondered, that sounded like a great breakfast to him, sure the breakfast mom made for them most days was good enough, but sometimes you just wanted a pop-tart for breakfast. But he was ready to find out with Ben what they had and make the most of this time they had to themselves.

It wasn't a particularly great joke, considering Ben was always pretty well behaved -- more so than most of the other kids, anyway. Sure, he whined sometimes but that wasn't really his fault. He had scary powers and he didn't want to use them. Him and Klaus always had it the worst, because they couldn't do fun stuff like throw knives, teleport or just be really strong. Well, maybe that was the joke: Ben being good wasn't shocking or new. So he giggled too, even if he didn't really know if he got it.

"Dunno," Ben said pushing himself up again, and this time out of the bed. His shirt was like a sea of cloth against him, the sleeves of the t-shirt going down to his forearms. "Let's find out?" He offered Klaus a hand down, even though he obviously could get down on his own if he wanted.

Klaus liked Ben best really, he got it the way the others didn't - they could all do fun things, things that were kinda cool. If Klaus could do what Allison did he'd tell their dad to never make them do lessons again, or at least to never lock him in with the ghosts again, but Allison never did that for him and he certainly couldn't. So yeah Ben was the best, Klaus was certain of that, more than he was about anything at all in this place.

"Yeah," He nodded, taking Ben's hand as he pushed down out of the bed too, his robe a little tangled up around his legs after his flopping around in bed, but he got himself sorted out after some tugging and twisting and he kept Ben's hand in his when they opened the door. And though he'd known they were alone in the house he still peered out into the hallway a bit just to double check before he was pulling Ben along with him.

"Down here," He urged, "They're gonna be here." He felt almost certain there were going to be pop-tarts, or at least things that they were really gonna like and as long as he had Ben there with him they were gonna have a great time figuring it out.
