Thor had been rapidly falling in a downward spiral since the moment he'd arrived in their new world. It'd started slowly but picked up the pace over time and he'd been reaching dangerously close to rock bottom levels. Mjolnir's arrival along with receiving his dead brother's helmet hadn't really helped with that. Both served to be constant reminders of his failures, and had really unraveled the God of Thunder.
His proclamation that he was going to be venturing through the doors to look for people in need of help was one that he was taking very seriously. Thor couldn't bring back the people who had been lost. He'd killed Thanos in the future, from what he'd been told, but that didn't bring anyone back and if he knew himself as well as he thought he did he didn't think it would've brought him any solace in the end. If anything it was just that much more depressing, knowing he'd finally done what he'd set out to do but it reaped no return.
But if there were other people he could help; people who could not help themselves and who could benefit from his skills, then he wanted to do it. It wouldn't erase the past or really even alleviate his guilt, but it would give him some sense of purpose again. Not to mention, he could help a lot of people and that was really what it was all about. Not himself, not his pride, not his feelings. People.
"Verily," he said. "I shall draw them to me and make a spectacle so no eyes will befall you." Gamora was someone he admired and respected a great deal. He knew of her troubled past, the things she had been made to do and her very complicated family dynamics. They could relate to each other in a number of ways. Working together with her was something he very much had been wanting to do for a good while. Knowing it irritated the hell out of Quill was amusing, though he'd not spoken to him quite as much recently.
"Ready yourself," he said, as his eyes began to glow and lightning sparked between his fingers and around his body. The clouds overhead began to pull together and darken as the same lightning spread through the sky. He raised storm breaker, and took off into the air where he unleashed a pretty show-off-ish display of thunder and lightning, before calling out to those who were attacking the people to turn their attention to the God of Thunder, who had shown up to vanquish them. It was enough to turn their attention, which was exactly the point.
