WHO: Kate Bishop and Tony Stark
WHAT: To infinity and beyond
WHERE: The doorway
WHEN: Today
RATING: g probably

Sure he'd gone through the door once already, it had been an experience to be sure, but once was not nearly enough to form any sort of real idea about what exactly was going on beyond those doorways, so he'd have to go through a number of times to get any real data. And he needed to bring the suit this time, see if he could gather any readings beyond a baseline for whatever world they ended up in. There was a lot to consider okay, and Tony - well Tony liked a mystery.

So when Kate had suggested a trip back through the door again, he decided that it was worth taking her up on it. He got the suit together, tucked away into a gauntlet to deploy in full if necessary and then went off in search of Kate.

Of course searching probably wasn't the right word for it, after all they'd already agreed to it so it was just a matter of meeting her. Tony grinned widely, pleased that he was going to get a second chance at doing this. "Kate!" He called out, sure she wasn't the Kate they'd had on campus but well, she looked near enough to the version he'd known, it felt almost familiar.

"I mean it wouldn't be my fault if she just wanted to go with me again." Tony pointed out, maybe it wasn't fair, but well - if there was one thing that Tony didn't let bother him too much in the moment it was fairness. He might feel a certain way about it after the fact, but yeah. It was all besides the fact for the moment because he was heading through the door with Kate and they had bigger things to worry about.

Like the fact that they stepped through the door and then suddenly it slammed shut behind them. Tony felt a chill of fear roll down his back when he realized additionally that not only had the door closed, but it had also disappeared. "Are we stuck here?!" He asked his voice rising a couple of octaves at the thought that he might end up trapped in some magical meadow where he'd have to spend the rest of his days maybe learning how to braid flower crowns or something?

Kate though seemed marginally less worried, telling him not to worry, that the door would simply pop up again. "Has this happened to you before?" He asked feeling like he might just have a heart attack over all of this.

Though he supposed since they were there they should look around, Tony was still nervous as hell that they'd suddenly become trapped there, but not one to waste a trip. "I guess." He said finally pulling up a gauntlet to see if he could get any readings from the town, but he didn't come up with anything out of the ordinary. No Marshmallow Men or hills that were coming alive to eat them, "It's going to be way less cool if it turns out we're stuck here." He grumbled as they started down toward the village together.

Kate brushed off his concern but shrugged her shoulders. "I'm pretty sure we're not stuck here," she said, glancing back at him. "I mean, like...90/10. Those are pretty good odds." They hadn't actually gone too far down the hills towards the village and Kate was already wishing they had a way to teleport. It would take them forever to get down there and even if they did find something to take back with them, they'd have to lug it uphill. Ugh, that sounded like the worst thing ever.

"Uh, yeah, once," she said, wondering how hard Tony would judge her if she tried to slide down one of the hills on her butt. Or maybe just start rolling. "And it showed itself once we got close to it! It's almost like an optical illusion. You don't see it until you're standing right in front of it!" She gave him what she hoped was a comforting, confident smile but it probably looked like she was trying too hard.

"Hey, think of it this way," she said, trucking over and down another hill. "Maybe if we're stuck here there'll be another little town that has its own mystery house with a door to different worlds. We just sit in front of that bad boy and keep opening and closing it until we find America 2.0." She realized that Tony might have more merit in Starklandia, but she just breezed on through.

"You can fly, can't you? Can't you get us there faster so we don't have to keep walking?"

"I can't believe the door closing isn't the sort of thing you'd mention when you told me about going through the door before." Tony protested, it was kind of vital information as far as he was concerned. Like 90/10 seemed like good odds, but there was a lot that could happen in that remaining 10 percent chance that they couldn't make it back. And well Tony was absolutely focused on that part of it all rather than the much larger percent, in Kate's estimation, that they'd be able to get back to the place they'd just left.

He'd have to reconsider a lot about going through the door if there was a chance of it closing on him again, he wasn't eager to end up trapped, at least not doubly trapped. "I'm going to remain doubtful until we see the door again," he told her dryly despite the way Kate seemed to be trying to reassure him with tales of her last time she'd been through the door and it had closed on her.

"That's a terrible bright side," He said stopping when she offered an alternative if they were stuck here. He didn't want to be trapped, not when he was already trapped, it'd be one thing if they'd walked out on to the Academy campus, or some other place that was familiar, he could feel a little better about that, but this, wide open meadows with a tiny town in a valley, that wasn't normal - and it only reminded him more of how trapped they were.

He sighed when she asked about flying and nodded, "Yeah, okay." He could shake off his fear maybe, maybe - well maybe not, but he could try and split his focus in a way that made himself seem a little bit better off. "Clench up Tauriel," He said after the helmet came down over his face and then picked her up. He flew low down near the ground so they didn't make any sort of spectacle of themselves as they got down to the little town they were going to explore until they found a way back to Starklandia thank you very much.

"Don't worry, we'll be fiiiine." She was surprised this was upsetting him so much, but she guessed she could understand. This was only his second time coming in, he was still learning the ropes. Not that having one more experience under her belt really made her the expert in the matter, but it was still one more time than he had gone in!

She hadn't really been expecting him to take her up on the offer, but she certainly wasn't complaining. "What did you just call me?" And they were off. Kate clung to him, watching as the scenery flew by them. "Ahh, this is MUCH better!" Plus she didn't have to do much of the work...well, any of it really! She still scanned their surroundings, making sure nothing sinister or evil seemed to be lurking or waiting to pounce on them; orc or otherwise, she'd be ready to have Tony's back if need be.

Once they arrived at the other village, Kate lost hope of finding anything modern. It looked almost like theirs, except there seemed to be more people and people that looked...old fashion? They reminded Kate of pilgrims, but they didn't seem to pay her or Tony any mind with their appearance. "Huh," she said, jumping out of Tony's arms to look around. "I guess we could still look around, see if we find anything useful?" She glanced over at him, wondering if his mind was still back across the hills to where the door (hopefully) was.

Tony cast an extremely doubtful look in Kate's direction, she seemed to be fairly confident that they'd be okay but Tony wasn't totally sold on it especially without an obvious out looking him in the face. And considering that he and Carol had the door open the whole time they'd been in the house they'd visited. But he supposed it wouldn't make much of a difference at this point, they were stuck until they found another door so they should just get on with exploring and pray that they found a door back.

He couldn't help but rolling his eyes when she didn't catch his Hobbit reference, and soon enough they were at the village, or just outside it, Tony didn't think that flying into the middle of town and setting down was really the way to go about it - not when people looked the way these people seemed to.

"Maybe we should try not to make too much of a spectacle of ourselves while we're here." He was already on edge with the disappearance of the door, the last thing he wanted was to end up on the bad side of some sort of provincial villagers, he had images of flames and pitch forks. "I don't think these really look like the coffee kinds of people, but maybe we'll be able to find something interesting here." Tony didn't think he'd get much in the way of tech here, but there would probably be other things of interest for them here.

"How do you think we're gonna do that with how we're dressed?" Between her hip holes and his futuristic robotic costume, they definitely stood out like a sore thumb. But the people went about their business so Kate just shrugged, looking at Tony. "We'll just go with the flow and hope things don't get aggressive." She held up her hands and crossed her fingers before moving to go further into the town.

Wow, it really looked exactly like theirs. There was even a well in the center square. "Weird," she muttered, glancing at all the people. "Do you think we went back in time? Maybe we're witnessing what happened and why we're all here!" She doubted, but she could always hope. It would be interesting to bring back something useful that was information.

They had a sort of farmer's market set up in the square and Kate wandered around the various stalls. "Maybe we should get some vegetables and stuff," she said, eyeing the heads of lettuce and tomatoes. "I mean, they aren't Cheetos, but I don't think we've started a garden yet?" And that might be helpful. As much as she was enjoying all the meat she and Clint were finding, something other than red meat would be good for their diets. What have I become?

"Hey mister, cool outfit! Where'd you get it?"

Yeah sure, they weren't exactly dressed for this sort of thing, but they could maybe try and.... blend a little? Okay maybe that was asking a bit much, but Tony had a hope and he couldn't help but think of the Prime Directive and just how much they were probably ruining something like that for even being here, but what else were they gonna do?

Looking around Tony saw the same similarities that Kate did, the way it was - well practically their own town, only you know, not empty. "So what happened to all the people if this is the past?" He wondered, of course a small voice in his mind wondered if maybe this was the future instead... they'd all been stuck forever in that town and settled down and started families and these were their distant relatives. God he needed to stop imagining himself in a horror film. They were going to get home.

Kate at least was more focused on what they might be able to bring back with them, when she asked about vegetables. "You're probably right, we're all gonna get scurvy if we don't eat a vegetable soon." And that was honestly not something he'd ever thought he'd have to say about himself, but he hadn't had a smoothie since he arrived and he was definitely low on his fresh food intake.

Of course just as he was ready to start looking around a little more there was a little voice that broke through his mind asking about his suit and Tony froze. "Uh... I made it?" He said after a moment, when it became fairly obvious that standing completely still was not going to make him invisible. He really needed to get to work on tech like that, it would come in handy for times like this. "It's a.... you know it helps me walk." He said finally not sure if he should explain more or not, deciding he was going with Kate's idea that they were in the past and not some sort of version of the future.

Kate didn't really want to think about what had happened to all the people and just gave a non-committed shrug. "Who knows? We don't know how far back we might have gone, so it could be any number of things." Any number of things that she didn't want to think about at the moment. She hadn't even considered the other option that was rolling about in Tony's head, which was this was their future. Probably for the best, because she would have read into each dark haired boy or girl that walked past them.

She stopped when she heard a little voice ask him the question and she wanted to hit herself in the head. Of course the thing she was trying to convince Tony (and maybe a little bit of herself?) about happened, seemingly right off the bat. She glanced from the kid to Tony, raising an eyebrow at how he would handle it. Which seemed to go...well. At least he wasn't really lying about it. And it seemed the kid was placated with the answer.

"It's really cool and shiny!" Kate smiled, relaxing just a little since he didn't seem to question or claim witchcraft. She wasn't sure if she'd be alright taking down some of these citizens to get them back to the door. That was probably, definitely still there.

She watched as he skipped away, breathing a sigh of relief. "See?" she asked, grinning at Tony. "Nothing to worry about!" She turned her attention back to the produce stand, wondering if they'd take American money. Or if they'd have to offer some kind of service to get it. "Excuse me," she said, stepping up to the booth. "How much for the lettuce?"

It could be any number of things, and that worried Tony. What could have happened to clear out an entire village of people like this? Sure the idea that the village had been put together just for them was an unsettling idea, but it was a little more comforting than the idea that they were now living in a place that had once been something like this, full of life and people who were living their own lives and you know just kind of doing their own thing.

Tony had been braced for the kid who had called out his suit to start yelling about the technology or something like that, but he seemed unbothered by it, instead calling the suit cool and shiny. Tony couldn't help but grin, because yeah - the armor was cool and shiny. "Thanks, I picked the colors out myself." He told him, before the boy was off to talk to someone else leaving Tony and Kate on their own again.

"Okay you keep up the not worrying, I'll take on that part of this mission." He said with a huff, letting her talk a little with a booth owner about the price of produce. Tony kept an eye out for them both, focused on the people surrounding them, he wanted to flip up the mask and get a heads up display of any readings they might be getting from this place, but he felt a little like it would draw too much attention to them while they were doing a very poor impression of blending in. So he'd settle for checking on any readings once they made it back.

His attention was instead caught by the sight of something that didn't quite fit the sort of provincial style old fashioned village they had first seen as they approached. He considered for a moment, but decided that if things did turn dicey he could get back to Kate quickly enough and instead approached a booth that was surrounded by children oohing and aahing in delight as over their heads a small little paper plane flew over their heads, apparently guided by a man holding two hands up seeming to direct the path of the plane overhead. It didn't seem to be the sort of thing that any of the adults looked twice at but all the children were delighted by it.

"Well that's cool." He said softly.

"Isn't it?" A small voice said from beside him and Tony let his gaze drop down to a young girl who was watching. "He only ever comes once a month, but his shows are the best. I missed him last month." She pouted at the reminder that she hadn't been able to see this the last time he'd been here.

"Do you know how he does it?" Tony wondered, curious but not wanting to butt into the performance and demand answers.

"Magic of course." She answered frowning at him like that much should have been obvious. Okay so maybe things weren't as obvious as they appeared.

"Can you do magic?" He asked her.

She rolled her eyes at him like he was asking her a stupid question. "I'm not old enough," She gave him the most put upon sigh he'd heard from anyone other than Steve Rogers, "And even when I am I might not be able to." She added. Huh? That was interesting. Magic but not everyone could do it - and yet he wasn't hiding his abilities either, displaying them for children watching. It was interesting. But he doubted it was the sort of thing that would get him far. He turned back to find Kate, wondering if they were going to have to just grab some things and run.

Kate had never had to haggle before, not like this, but she found she had a good knack for it. These people seemed to actually take American money and she began to doubt that they weren't back in America...somehow. For $20, she was able to get some lettuce, tomatoes, green beans, carrots, and snap peas. That seemed like a good amount of food for the amount and she turned to show Tony her haul, a big grin on her face and the bag outstretched in her hand (maybe so he would take it and carry it since she did the haggling). Except...he wasn't there. She glanced around, only a small amount of panic rising in her throat when she finally spotted him.

"Find anything exciting?" she asked, still holding the bag out for him to take. She glanced over his shoulder in the direction he had come from. "What's going on over there?" She squinted, looking at the white things flying in the air. "Are those...paper planes?" She glanced at Tony, an eyebrow raised.

"There's magic here too?"

Tony took the bag she offered him looking inside to see what she'd been able to get - definitely more than just a single vegetable by the looks of it, it was much better than he'd thought things would have gone, he'd had images of having to grab a bin of vegetables and run, but a bag full was much better.

"Yeah, yeah they are." He nodded as she looked behind him to the scene he'd just left. "Looks like it, it looks like it's not that common, but it's ordinary enough that most people don't look twice at it." He told her shrugging, he didn't think there was anything to do with it - at least not where they were concerned, but it was something interesting. "Should we keep looking around, see what else we can find. Or are we finished with vegetables?"

He had seen a couple of other booths that looked interesting, he wouldn't mind checking them out if they had time "Do you think the door is going to wait until we decided we're ready to go? Or do we have to like... keep a look out for it?" He asked her, she had a much better idea of how to deal with the disappearing doors than he did so he was willing to let her take the lead there.

"Oh my god, look." He said distracted almost immediately by a booth over her shoulder with small little mechanical toys and things, some that looked like they were obviously powered with magic, others wound up in various ways, but Tony was absolutely delighted by the look of them. "Kate look at this," He said waving her over. "I need them."

Kate was just about to say they should probably head back when she was cut off and she watched as he wandered over to another. It only took her a second to follow after, happy she wasn't carrying the bag anymore. "Well, let's get some?" She looked at the shop keeper and nodded towards one of the microbots. "How much for dem bots?" As soon as she asked it, she immediately regretted it and shook her head. "Yeah. Right. Sorry. Um, how much for one?" The seller looked them up and down, scratching his beard like some cartoon merchant. Kate had to stifle a laugh.

"$50."

Kate glanced at Tony, not 100% sure if that was a fair price, but it seemed like it. "You gonna keep one of them as a pet?"

Tony was maybe suddenly a little in love with Kate, like in a weird sort of way. He couldn't explain it because she had already proved to be a little anxiety inducing in the little time he'd known her - but still he had hearts in his eyes for a moment when she asked about how much the little bots were going for.

His attention turned to the man, watching him as he considered the pair of them before he laid down his price. Tony narrowed his eyes looking at the bots, watching as they walked around, if they were at home, if he had access to all of his equipment he could recreate something like this, but here in this world they were something special, maybe not to these people though - he thought about the way they talked about magic.

Of course he was gonna keep it as a pet, and love it and dote upon it and see if he could try and build something like it himself.

"How about $40?" He offered to the man, because maybe it was fair Tony wasn't quite sure, but this market place did seem to be the sort for haggling, as evidenced by the bag of vegetables he now had for Kate.

The man narrowed his eyes at them for a moment, like he was considering how far he'd be willing to push this and then offered "$48."

"Come on work with us a little," Tony really did have his heart set on one of these things though so if he was going to be firm that'd be it, but he hoped maybe he could talk him down a little more. It was a strange place to be in - having to haggle, but considering the circumstances, and the limited amount of money they actually had, and that it was a limited resource at this point - well haggling seemed okay. "$45?"

Wow, Tony was pretty good at this. Kate just kind of took a step back, crossing her arms as she watched the back and forth between him and the shopkeep. Maybe he should have been the one to haggle with the vegetables.

She glanced at the seller when he offered at $45, giving him a face that said 'you're not gonna be able to beat that deal'. He looked from Kate to Tony, trying to see if he could push his luck.

"Alright, deal," he said, holding his hand out for them to pay. Kate dug through her wallet and found the cash, handing it to him. "So which one do we own now? We get joint custody, right? What are we gonna name him?" She was glancing down at the various moving bits, trying to guess which one he would choose.

Tony grinned brightly when the stall keeper agreed to their lowered price, it wasn't much of a discount, but it was something and there was a kind of thrill in that, in finding out that you got a better deal, it was the sort of thing he'd never done before and he couldn't help but be pleased by even this small victory.

When Kate asked him which one they were getting he crouched down to the height of the table top to get a better look at them moving around, there were some more simple ones, one that seemed to move back and forth watering small metal plants, and some that twirled delightfully, Tony was incredibly tempted to just take it apart once they got it to see what made it tick, but he knew better, magic was something that he had no abilities in so if he was going to do that it'd be the end of their new little friend. And with Kate asking about joint custody and naming he knew that wasn't something he could do.

And wasn't that he wouldn't adore their little pet thing, because obviously he would but he just had this burning desire to know how everything worked, even things beyond his skill set. His gaze settled on one little bot thing that pranced back and forth taking flips and presenting himself for applause after each turn he took, leaving Tony totally charmed by it. "What do you think of this one, Kate?" He asked pointing out the one he liked.

Kate had been looking at the various robots as well, wondering the same things that were going through Tony's head. She figured he wanted one of these little guys to take him apart back home and use the tech to help their town. But the more she watched these things play about, it was a little sad to think of one of them becoming spare parts.

She glanced at the one Tony pointed to and she squatted down to get a better look at it. "This is actually going to be our pet, right?" Kate wasn't sure how it was possible, but she was starting to like these little things; they really did seem like robotic pets. The one he seemed most interested in definitely had that kind of show off personality that it only seemed fitting.

"Tony Jr then?" she asked, glancing up at the man. "So do we get a little carrier for it or something like that?" The man just huffed, shaking his head. "Just take and go." He waved them away as if they were taking up valuable space in front of his stall and Kate nodded her head for Tony to take the little guy.

"Alright, we got veggies and Tony Jr. I think that'll be good for this first trip, yeah?" She certainly felt more successful than her last encounter with the orcs. She just prayed they could get out of there before anything more sinister could present itself.

"Yeah" Tony agreed, this was absolutely going to be their pet. He missed the bots from home, and he wasn't really an actual pet kind of guy, but something like this. Tiny and adorable and a marvel of engineering magic or not - yeah Tony loved it.

He couldn't help but grin hugely when she suggested Tony Jr, it seemed like their haggling had pushed the guy to the limits of his patience and he was ready to be finished with them, so Tony gathered up their new little friend and felt better about their time here.

"Yeah I think we can call this done," He agreed. Of course now this lead them to the quandary of the door and where it would be since it disappeared. But as he and Kate made their way back toward the edge of town the door just seemed to present itself to them like it had been waiting for them to do what they liked in the town and then decide they were finished.

"Huh." He said thoughtfully, "Well I guess you were right, let's head back then." He opened the door for her so they could head back home again with their spoils.
