Of course Tony knew why he was like that, but it sort of hurt to hear it out loud. They all had their issues -- either to do with trust, or just being afraid of having and losing, things like that. But knowing those problems existed and hearing about them just felt very different.
Although, really, if either of them were going to talk to anyone about it, it ought to have been each other. Tony liked to think that they were maybe at that place now. Where they could talk about anything. They'd been through enough and they were both serious about what they had. So. There was that.
And that Steve was still here and committed, particularly since everything was unsure here and entirely too certain in the future -- well. It spoke volumes.
"Better to realize it before you take the plunge, I guess," Tony said, feeling a little badly for the whole situation. "Not that I'd know. But. You know." He didn't think he could have started fresh after the snap. If he'd lost Peter and Pepper, he wouldn't have been giving it his all with some rando in a grocery store, no matter how well intentioned. "Well. I wanted to say something snide like his loss, my gain, but frankly, I think it'd probably be in poor taste at this point."
