Who: Sirius Black, James Potter
What: Chillin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool
Where: Hair of the Dog
When: August 29th

It wasn't all that impressive. Their shop, that was.

Well. It wasn't really a shop. It was an apothecary with a scarce number of supplies because James had stolen some once and Sirius --had not stolen some once. At least not in large quantity. He tried finding useful things behind the door when he could, and things could be copied as needed sometimes but it was still rather sparse.

Maybe because Sirius was better at planning parties and running off with Remus more than he was managing any sort of business. Even if it wasn't a business because there was no for-profit part in the equation. Still, sometimes it was nice to feel responsible.

And sometimes it was nice to pretend he was being responsible all while not being. Like now, for example, when he was sprawled out on top of the glass countertop that was housing the few potions they had on hand. Probably he should be making more. Maybe checking in with Bill about some collaboration. Something like that.

But for now lounging was nice.

"We need a portable record player for in here," he told James, tapping his foot on the glass.

Sparse was a good word for it. While they could take other items and transfigure them into things--glass jars into vials and whatnot--there were a lot of things that could not be replicated or recreated in any meaningful way. James spent a bit of time every other day or two trying all the Doors and looking for magic on the other side. If he could find a way back into their world or a world that was anything like theirs, he'd go in and try to scavenge. But those times were few and far between.

Still, it was nice to have a shop. Nice to feel like they were doing something meaningful. Nice to have something to do between flying/quidditch practices and other adventures. James loved to make believe he was an awesome shop keep and they had important things going on.

James was in his chair--the kind with wheels that leaned back and spun around in circles--when Sirius spoke. He looked up from his book. "Yeah? We should probably get some records, then, too."

"I've got a billion records," Sirius said with a wave of his hand, dismissive. It looked a little swishier than all that though, since he was laying flat on his back and waving up at the air. "Those we can carry about back and forth no problem. Unpluggling all that muggle tech though -- more difficult." Not that Sirius didn't think he could do it, give or take a lesson or two with the younger Tony or Gwen the Brilliant. it just felt tedious.

"Just a thought. I've also heard there's a way to get it on our phones. Haven't figured it out yet. If it's a thing." Sirius was skeptical. But he liked the idea of it, so that was something.

"Whatcha reading?"

Clearly he was just bored and looking for attention more than anything.

"You sure you want to lug them all back and forth?" James asked, though Sirius had pretty much already answered that question. If they got duplicates, then they could have a stash at each--but it would require finding more of them through the Doors. They were already having trouble finding potions supplies, let alone records.

The phone was new to both of them, though it seemed like Sirius may have picked it up a bit better than James. James knew how to send messages and read the net... but he wasn't sure about any of the other features. And there were times when the thing was out of energy because James let the battery die. Whoops.

"That sounds good--we should do that." Then James lifted his eyes again from the page and held up the cover so Sirius could see. It was a copy of The Call of Cthulhu, by HP Lovecraft. "I'm not sure I'm enjoying it yet."

"Doesn't seem like a huge issue to me?" Sirius said. Anyway, he had so many records it seemed like just a dumb waste of time and resources to go looking for more of them right now. He hadn't even sorted through all the ones he had so far. Anyway, they were easy to carry.

He twisted and turned until he was seated atop the counter, legs crossed underneath him and he squinted over at the book that James was reading. Lovecraft. "Wazzat?" He asked, head tilting to the side in that curious puppy look that he got sometimes. Sirius was well versed in cute puppy looks. "Some kinda porno?"

Maybe they could just leave a handful of records in the shop? Either way, James would enjoy the music. He thought Sirius had the best taste in music, really. He was more than willing to simply follow along and enjoy the show. "Sounds good, then."

James lifted a hand to push the glasses up his nose, breaking into a frown at that idea. "Porno? No. No, no." Not that porn was gross, of course, but he'd been told this book was about tentacle creature/monsters coming from another dimension, and that sounded very gross. (Tentacle porn??)

"No, this is supposed to be very frightening. A horror story about monsters from another dimension coming through to our world." At least. the world they'd left behind. "I'm only a handful of pages in so far."

"It's called Love-Craft. How's that not porno?" Sirius groused, flopping back down -- clearly far less interested in a book about monsters from other dimensions. Especially after having seen some just the other day in 'Vegas. Seemed a bit repetitive at this point.

Then, he'd never been much of one for reading fiction, anyway. Although he might get into more of it here, considering there wasn't a load else to do.

"Supposed to be frightening? That mean it isn't? Sounds weird."

"That's the name of the author," James explained patiently. "This H.P. guy. He must have had an incredibly twisted mind to come up with some of this stuff. Then again, maybe he was just ahead of his time. I mean, being sucked into an alternate dimension? Wonder what that's like."

James closed the book after turning down the corner of the page he was reading, and set it on the counter. "I haven't gotten that far in. Honestly, I thought it'd be a whole lot more interesting than it is."

Yes, Sirius knew it was the name of the author. James was really taking all the fun out of this whole scenario and Sirius had half a mind to tell him so. Maybe later though. He was feeling lazy currently and playful arguing seemed like it might take a lot of effort just now.

"Oi, yeah," Sirius said sarcastically. "Wonder what that's like? A whole different dimension. S'right bonkers is what that is. Not even a little realistic." Because that was the joke, right? They were living through that? "Well, there're more books if you don't like it."

It had definitely been a joke. Because it was pretty weird that they were going through, like, the same thing. Only, less tentacles.

"I'll probably find another book." James shrugged. "Unless we can think of something more entertaining to do. You have any ideas?"

Well maybe they should get some tentacles. Surely that'd be a good and very weird time, right?

Mm. Probably not. Maybe pass on that. Probably.

"Dunno," Sirius said, pushing himself up to sitting and glancing down between his legs at the potions in the glass case below him. It felt pretty clear that no one was gonna come in looking for a potion. It also felt a little like they could just... do this job without being here most the time if they left a number on the door so people could reach them. "We could do something else entirely," he decided. "Or visit the library for a new book. Moony's probably there."

Yes. Very good and very weird. And a pass would probably be James' vote, though he didn't always have any clout where these things were concerned.

"Yeah, I'd like a new book." James climbed up from his chair and picked up the Lovecraft book. Moony had probably already read it, but someone else in Starklandia was probably interested in reading it. Maybe. There were a bunch of other things to read, anyway.

Moony had read mostly everything. That was what he did. He read stuff, while Sirius listened to his records and bopped around and sometimes complained about being bored until someone paid attention to him.

But Sirius, he didn't do particularly much in the way of reading. Not because he disliked it, but because that much sitting still wasn't for him, particularly when there wasn't a grade involved. Hell, he hadn't really studied much in school either -- had just relied on his cleverness to get him through. Which had always worked. A bad lesson, but it hardly mattered when it was successful.

"We need new hobbies," he said, locking up behind them and sticking his wand back into his pocket.

James fell into step beside his best friend, the book clutched in his hand. He gave a little chuckle. "Yes. Yes, we do. What did you have in mind? I suppose we could start watching the muggle television. There are a bunch of movies around. Or we could explore."

James had been meaning to bring that up. Pushing boundaries was sort of their thing. He was interested in mapping out the area--they'd already done it once at school, they could do it again. He wanted to make sure they had explored out as far as they could go.

Unfortunately for James, that sort of keen exploring had already been done. The newly made Marauder's Map was a thing that already existed -- sitting at the bottom of Sirius' bedside table. The residents of the town who'd been here at the time had protested loudly against the thing and it hadn't seemed worth the trouble. Maybe some day he'd dust it off again, but right now -- well. It hadn't much occurred to him.

"We could do all of those things," Sirius pointed out. "Not like we're lacking in time.

"We could make a list of all the things we want to do, and then go through them one by one." James suggested. "Starting with some flying. I've got the makeshift pitch up and running--I could use your help with the hoops. They're a bit wonky, I think. I've never had an eye for perfect circles."

"You know I love Quidditch," Sirius said, "And flying. But one's a bit more effective than the other here. What with all the ... no other wizards about." He shrugged though. "I can help. We can figure it out. And sure, we can make a list. Moony'll like that. You know how he is about lists. Gwen's teaching me drums. I think we oughta find more instruments."

"We'll have to figure out a way for muggles to fly." James frowned a little. It wasn't something they'd ever had to do before, but they could sort it out, couldn't they? "If we're gonna have a full quidditch game, or even a full team, we'll have to people it with non-magical folk." He shrugged his shoulders. A life without quidditch? They couldn't have that.

"More instruments? Are you looking to put together a band?"

Well, maybe James couldn't have that. Sirius didn't have a particularly strong opinion on it -- he liked Quidditch, but he wasn't sure he missed it quite enough yet to teach a brand new and difficult sport to a bunch of muggles who couldn't even make a broom fly on their own. Maybe if they all showed enough interest, he supposed.

"I dunno. Maybe not a band. Or maybe yes? It's just a cool thing to do. Like all them muggle posters. Queen. Depeche Mode. Brilliant."
