Bucky Barnes / Steve Rogers (MCU)
It was a hard reality to accept at first, when Bucky had believed for so long that Steve was the person he'd always been meant for, to come to the realization that things had changed. They were soulmates, but in a different way. Tied to each other by a bond that would never break, but that bond was the testament of true friendship. It had been a jarring realization to have, when Bucky realized that no, Steve was not the person he was going to spend the rest of his life in love with. The two of them could've gone on for another hundred years wondering 'what if.' Instead, they'd moved forward. Separately with other people, but still together as best friends who loved each other. They hadn't replaced each other with Tony and Clint, they weren't settling with Tony and Clint. They were both happy, they were with who they were meant to be with.
That was why Bucky wanted to get married. And why he wanted Steve to stand beside him as his best friend.
When Steve said he would, Bucky let out a breath he didn't even realize he'd been holding. It wasn't that he thought Steve would say no, but hearing how confident he sounded and how serious he was obviously taking the request meant so much to him. His heart did a little flip in his chest; Best friends since childhood, Bucky Barnes and Steven Rogers were inseparable on both schoolyard and battlefield. He'd never forgotten those words that played in the Smithsonian when he traveled there after regaining his memories. Inseparable, no matter how they looked at each other. And right now, he was looking at his best friend in the world.
"He likes my hair. Says the Bucky he knew didn't wash his." Bucky ran his hand through the long, dark locks that had grown a bit more since he'd arrived in Starklandia. "I've got everything else. Just needed you or it wouldn't have been right."
