WHO: Marguerite and Miles
WHAT: Meeting/Fencing Training talk
WHERE: Courtyard
WHEN: Now
RATING: PG-13 just to be safe.

Marguerite was slowly getting used to this place. Sure it was strange, but she had seen her share of strange during her years on the plateau....and even before that, really. She hadn't planned on making so many friends, but it seemed her time with the others had softened her heart more than even she had realized. She decided that this person that was so interested in learning fencing might be another good friend to make. Giving him lessons would be a good way to pass the time here, and besides it might wind up saving his life or maybe even hers if they were to have to fight someone or something together. Of course there was the fact that they would have to find swords or maybe even make some, but those were hurdles that could be crossed as time passed. For right now she would just need to know what other kinds of fighting training the young man had and how much of her fencing training he wanted her to share. She knew her fair share about swords, knives, guns....basically anything that could be used in a confrontation to save her life she had made sure she knew how to handle it.

Her switchblade knife was still in her boot, and of course she never went anywhere without her pistol and her whip. Both were fastened securely to her belt as she made her way through the courtyard, looking for the person she was meant to meet. After circling the courtyard twice she decided that she must have beat him there, so she made her way over to a patch of ground out of the walkway and sat down to watch for a new arrival. She reached down into her boot and pulled out the switchblade knife and began to open and close it, occasionally twirling it around. It was clear that handling this knife was second nature to her, because it wasn't long that she was humming a tune her mind clearly elsewhere. But the knife twirling never faltered and she never seemed to miss a twirl.

Her mind wondered to where she knew it shouldn't go, thinking of the friends she had left behind. Getting lost in those thoughts was dangerous and she knew it, so she forced herself to take a deep breath and focus on the blade in her hand. She twirled it one more time, snapped it close and slid it back in her boot.

"They're probably fine- I mean, if we're here, I always assumed life just...went on without us..." He sounded sad about that, his mind drifting back to his friends and his parents. He had been so worried when he first got here about how his mom would take his absence. It wasn't like he didn't think about her all the time, but it was getting less and less frequent these days.

"Yeah?" Miles grinned. He had almost pointed out that she seemed kind of a loner-type, but he didn't want to offend her so he kept quiet (for once).

"Huh? No. It's uh, like 'good'. You say cool to mean uh...hip? Awesome?" He wasn't sure what slang she would understand, though. "What year are you from, again??"

"Yes, but when I left my friends were in danger" she admitted. She hadn't said that out loud to anyone just yet, but it had been weighing on her mind this entire time. What had happened to the others? Did they manage to stop what was happening all over the plateau? And if they had were they still looking for her? All those thoughts weighing on her mind...it was no wonder she hadn't slept through the night since arriving in this new place.

"Yeah. I grew up in a series of orphanages and places like that" she said. Normally it wasn't information she would share right off the bat, but something about this kid put her mind at ease enough to be honest....or maybe it was the fact that she just tired of having to hide who she was all the time. The plateau had helped her lower some of those walls, and she didn't want to put them back up.

"The 1920s". Her smile was still somewhat there as she thought about her own time and wondered if she would ever see it again. "And yourself? I don't recognize your dialect".

"Oh. That sucks. I'm sorry," Miles muttered and scratched the back of his head because what else could he say about that? It did suck. He would be overcome with some serious guilt if he'd been int hat situation before he got here. Hell, he was feeling guilty now when he knew his parents were safe and when he'd just disappeared on them.

Orphanages. Sounded tough. Miles was realizing more and more just how lucky he was as he listened, especially when he heard some of the stories around Starklanida. He had a pretty amazing upbringing compared to some. Spider-bite and all.

"Uh, 2018." He shrugged. "Bit of a different time from yours. And place, I guess. Grew up in New York. My dad was a cop, and yeah...I mean, typical teenager for where and when I come from I guess, except for the wall-crawling."

"Not the phrase I would have used, but you are certainly correct" she answered with a small nod. All she could do now was hope that her friends were alright and that maybe they would find their way to her in time. It was nice to see that someone else cared so much about her pain...someone she had only just met. It was new to her. The time she came from most people didn't really care about the troubles of others, but this place seemed to be different.

"So, you're father was a police officer?" she asked, wanting to learn more about him. She knew her fair share of officers, but as different as this place was she was guessing that officers might be different here as well.

"And what was your profession?" she continued. She didn't know if he was a student of if he had already left school to do something else. In his time she didn't know what age was appropriate for leaving school. "Wall crawler is not a profession I am familiar with".

Miles wasn't sure what she meant about his phrasing, but then again, he hadn't really thought about how someone from her era might speak any differently than someone in 2018. Instead, he was happy to answer her question, smiling a little. "Uh, yeah. He's a pretty good guy, mostly. Likes to embarrass me, but I really can't complain." Miles had become well aware of what his life might be like without his dad.

And lately, he'd been especially missing his parents.

"Me? Oh! I'm still in school, actually. Or I was. Here I work at COFFEE when I can- guess it'll be good experience for when I get back and want a job." He used when, because Miles had to think that someday he would go back.

"Uh..yeah, it's not a typical profession..." Miles smirked and shrugged. "Don't suppose you've met the other spider-kids yet, have you?" Peter Parker? Gwen Stacey?

"So, you're a student? You must be rather intelligent" she answered, assuming he was going to school for some kind of degree. In her time that would be the case for a young man of his age.

"So, what was your main interest in school?" she asked, wanting to get to know more about the things he liked. After all that was what people did when they wanted to make friends with the person, right?

"You would be my first, wall crawler" she continued with a sly grin on her lips. She didn't know what this profession was, but the more he talked about it the more interested she became. "So, what exactly does a wall crawler do?" she finally asked.

Miles laughed and shrugged. "I mean, I guess I am? I dunno. I'm good at science," he explained and shrugged. "But everyone goes to school where I come from. It's kind of required." Or else you end up with someone like his father knocking on your door and asking why you haven't been coming to class.

"I like science. Good at science, like I said. I guess English isn't so bad, either. But I hate history. My teacher has a tendency to just go on and on and on about dates and places and I sometimes zone out." Which was why his grade was so bad. He probably needed to work on that when he got back.

Oh. Miles looked around and then grinned, suddenly shooting a web to the nearest wall and using it to pull himself up, sticking to the wall near the top of the building and calling down. He did a little bit of crawling down before leaping off, doing a flip in the air and landing in front of her again. "Spider-powers. There's a few of us here."

"All the children your age have to go to school?" she asked, a tone of surprise in her voice. It certainly wasn't required where she came from....especially for young women. Either you worked or married well, and for the most part it was marry well. She liked the idea of educating people better. It had certainly helped her, but then again she wasn't really the norm in her world, and most women didn't know much about anything other than the frivolous hobbies that were acceptable for them.

"What type of Science?" she asked, eagerly. "I know my fair share about geology and a little about chemistry.....the latter thanks to a friend of mine" she admitted, her thoughts turning to Challenger and knowing that he would be fascinated by this turn of events if he were there.

"And honestly History was never my favorite either" she admitted. "It seemed so trivial, but then again knowing history can sometimes help you in the field. I find certain points in history fascinating and I find that going to the places where historical events happened made them seem more real for me and easier to remember".

She watched in awe as he showed off his powers and a small smile appeared on her face. "Well it seems you are very talented indeed, young sir" she added, with a slight nod of her head to emphasize her point. "My skills are slightly different" she added as she stepped back from him, and removed her whip from her waist at the same time. She turned to face a tree and swung her whip over her head, slashing it forward, knocking off only one leaf...the one she had been aiming for. The other leaves remained intact and barely tussled.

"There's that, fencing, linguistics, medicine and I am a fairly decent shot with a pistol or a rifle" she admitted, a hint of pride in her voice. " A lady has to learn to survive when she's on her own".

"Uh, yeah. It's the law," Miles shrugged regarding school. Truth was, he kind of missed it. Well, he missed his friends. And how normal it was, even if he was living away from home at the time. "It's not too bad, though. Food's pretty good. Plus I had some good friends." Sort of.

"Chem. Bio. Physics. You name it. I was pretty good at bio, though... I like learning about living things and how they work. But I guess my best subject was art."

Okay, that was pretty cool. He stared at the leave and grinned. "Whoa. Can you teach me that?" He really, really liked the idea of learning a whip. Just like Indiana Jones! Yessss, this could be awesome. "A lady??" he laughed. "I mean, you're a lady, obviously, but uh.....gonna guess you're just getting used to the other ladies around here, huh? The world's changed a lot since when you come from. I think, anyway."
