"Be that as it may, I'm not really interested in making a fool of myself out there for everyone to see." He gestured toward the dance floor. Dancing really was not his thing. He'd do it for Betty, with Betty on his arm. But she was the exception to a lot of his personal rules. She had a way of getting under his skin, prompting him to do things he wouldn't otherwise do.
The problem here was that there was no Betty on his arm. And no one else was ever going to take her place. She was, he'd decided a long time ago, his end game. He didn't want anyone but her. And if she wasn't with him, then he was going to be alone.
"I mean, you're welcome to it," he said, with another less demonstrative gesture toward the dance floor. "There's no reason you can't go out and enjoy being a spectacle if that's your thing."
