Who: Carol Danvers (MCU) and Nyx
What: Contemplating an unexpected surprise
Where: Pancho's
When: Wednesday afternoon
Rating: TBD

Carol was finally recovering from the past few weeks. Between being sick and the whole werewolf fiasco, there had been a lot of recovering to do. The bar was now repaired thanks to some help from Natasha and supplies from Nyx, and they were back up and running as usual. The whole town was getting better. Things were looking up.

And then she woke up this morning to an old, beat-up cardboard box sitting on the bartop. At first, she thought it was something someone had just dropped by. Maybe supplies from Klaus or Nyx. But her heart stopped when she opened it and just...stared. The first thing she pulled out was a framed photo of her and Maria, singing from over twenty years prior. Carol hadn't expected that tightening in her chest. Inside, more photos. Maria. Monica. T-shirts. And her dog tag. She picked it up, running her thumb over the burnt metal.

That had been three hours ago and now she sat at the bar, half a bottle of emptied Asgardian liquor next to her, that same framed photograph of Maria and her in her hand and classic 80s rock now playing on the bar's pitiful sound system. Shit. Whoever had brought this had some messed up sense of humor. She couldn't remember a time when she wanted to punch someone more in the face in her life. And that included Yon.

Nyx, was actually in a good swing of a mood. People were rebounding from being sick, and people seemed to be getting back into the routine of their lives again. Especially him. Being cooped up for that time while people were sick, was painful. The doors were his outlet for stress, and gave him something that resembled purpose. Not having that was rough, but then he was able to distract himself making sure everyone had things they needed. From soup to books to even Pop-Tarts.

Things were good, and he deserved a drink. So he walked tall and proud, because who better to share a drink with other than his favorite blonde super hero Carol Danvers. Plus she was fun to be flirty with, and that said something on it's own.

Though his mood shifted dramatically when he walked into the bar. His eyes fell on Carol, and he knew immediately something was off. What it was, Nyx didn't know, but the air in the room was thick with emotion. "Hey." Nyx called out to announce himself as he approached seeing the bottle next to her. It was the strong stuff, and immediately the Glaive started steeling himself for the evening he was about to have.

"Something's up. You alright?" Nyx finally was close enough to see the look on her face. "What's wrong? What happened." His eyes drifted to the box. Whatever it was, it wasn't good.

She heard him come in, but she hadn't bothered to look up, even if the temptation to shout that they were closed was heavy in the air. Maybe it was because the alcohol was slowing her down. Or maybe it was because she wasn't sure if she wanted to be alone right now. Carol let out a sigh, finishing whatever was in the cup next to her but not yet pouring another drink as she finally looked up at who came in. Nyx. Go figure.

Carol probably looked like shit. She'd been crying earlier, something she almost never did in front of another person. Her hair was messier than it might have normally been, and there was something sad in her eyes as she looked back at the picture in her hand.

"Did I ever tell you about Maria?" She started slowly because she was pretty sure she hadn't She talked about her, sure, but there were some memories Carol held close to the chest. Her memories were precious to her, for some pretty obvious reasons.

Yup. Carol looked absolutely like shit, but that was fine. Nyx wasn't one to judge that. People had their emotions, and their feelings. Those things needed to be released or you could go insane. Nyx was just glad he showed up at all. Carol needed a friend, and he would be happy to be that friend.

"You've said the name." Nyx nodded. "Though you hadn't told me much about her." Though through bits and pieces of information, Nyx was able to piece together that this Maria was someone very special to Carol. Nyx figured it was that special person people had in their lives, but he was never able to ask her about it at all. Mostly because he didn't believe it was his place to ask.

Now what were the steps to comforting a crying woman, more specifically, a crying woman that was Carol? Blankets and ice cream? Was that the remedy? No. She was a drinker. Shrugging off his coat, Nyx sat next to her, facing her giving her his full attention. "If you want to talk about it, I'm all ears." He shrugged. "If you want to drink in silence, I can do that too." He offered.

She said nothing as he pulled up to the bar, but she knew the drink in the bottle was probably too strong for him. Sliding it a little closer to her side, she nodded to the bar for him to pull up whatever he liked and she poured herself another cup. After a long drink, Carol winced and set the mug down again before sighing and handing him the picture.

"That's us. I can't even remember when it was taken, but that's at the original Pancho's." There was a sad smile when she said it. "God, her smile was so beautiful...."

Her voice was on edge when she said it, staring at the photo with a sad sort of whimsy. She couldn't believe how much about her old life seemed to fade away when she was among the stars. Even with her memories back. Her memories of Maria were strong, but...time was not kind.

"We were together since basic. The two of us against the world. Um....it wasn't legal, back when I was in the Air Force. Hell, it wasn't acceptable in most places." She started then realized Nyx, who was from an entirely different world, might need more. "Maria and I had a lot going against us. You could be kicked out of the military for being gay back where I'm from. And then Maria had Monica and there was always the fear of someone who come and take her away because we were perverse." Carol scoffed at the notion, wiping a tear from her eye. Shit. There was a lot more to unpack than she'd realized.

"I would have married her if I could have."

Nyx took the photo, and then it all lined up well in his head. There was certain things people did, or said when there was pining to be done. Carol wasn't alone in the habits, for Nyx acknowledged his own issues with it. Considering that Nyx had a thing for the woman seated next to him.

"Well, she's stunning." Nyx complimented the woman in the picture. He looked to her. "Lucky pair to find each other."

Sure they came from a very different set of worlds, but that was one thing he understood. Homosexuality was just as common as hetero relationships. There wasn't any judgement from Nyx. Nyx believed people should do as they wanted, especially if it didn't do anything to harm others. But Nyx listened to her words, and it sounded like a bunch of bullshit for a military to put out there. Or the concern of a child being taken. It was all disgusting.

Slowly, Nyx nodded, only wanting to know that specific feeling finding someone to be close enough to get married. Taking a deep breath, Nyx spoke finally. "That's all rough, I can't even imagine." Nyx tapped a finger on the bar considering what he was drinking, before leaning over the bar and grabbing a mug and random bottle. "I'm sorry you're hurting." Nyx commented, knowing there was little comfort in the statement.

Carol smiled at Nyx's approval, staring at the photo and nodding. "Yeah. We were. Only two women who made it all the way through our program." She was proud of that, clearly. She sighed and took another long drink before standing up to start digging back around the box.

Nyx's words were kind. She nodded a bit at them as she looked through the box, absentmindedly running her hands over fabric and then coming to something else. A small pile of drawings. She stared, biting her lip and pulling gout a picture of a little girl sitting on a younger Carol's shoulders. Carol was grinning and the little girl was laughing, holding an ice cream cone and dressed i an old flying cap.

"So this is Monica." Carol actually sounded proud as she shared the photo, grinning despite the tears still threatening in her eyes. "Maria's daughter. Um...kind of my daughter." Definitely her daughter as far as Maria had been concerned. "I helped raise her since she was born. Maria got knocked up by some asshole right out of basic- it was a complicated start fo us." Carol didn't want to explain how or why it happened. She and Maria didn't talk about it, mostly because Maria had been worried Carol might try to kill the guy if she knew too much... Maria had been right.

"Anyway, she wanted to be a pilot Lt. Trouble was fierce. Last time I saw her was when she was a teenager..." There was a moment of silence and Carol took another drink, putting the photo away and digging through the box again.

Pouring himself that drink, Nyx focused more on what she was sharing. Drink came second to the stories. Nyx kept his focus on the woman. Leaning forward he looked at the picture that was found. Taking the picture, Nyx examined the child. A spike in his chest. Something that was never done back home for him. Children. His lineage had ended with him in that city. Worry about that later.

"Tough kid." Nyx commented with a glance to Carol and the proud eyes she wore regarding the child. As a parent should have. His eyes dipped to examine the photo more before returning it to Carol. "Family isn't blood." Nyx commented. "It's those who are there, supporting, lifting, and caring." He shrugged, thinking to the Glaives, but then that same spike in his chest shifting knowing half those men and women betrayed the whole order and the crown. More to think on later, for Carol was the focus. "The three of you were a family, and you instilled your best qualities, and Monica sounds like the type of woman who made sure Maria knew exactly who you were." Nyx shrugged. "Just my thoughts.

Nyx finally took the drink he poured and swallowed it down. Welp, tequila was the random bottle. Time for an interesting night. "You should focus on that good, and not the bad." The Glaive commented. "Despite the difficulty that is." He knew.

Carol was definitely drunk by now. She knew she was. It was the only reason she was being so open and sharing so much, but she didn't care. It felt good to get it out. And Nyx was one of the few people she knew she could trust with this stuff.

"She was amazing." Carol smiled as she carefully put the photo away. She already decided a lot of these were going to be hung up around her room. Even if it hurt, she wanted the reminders.

She might even hang some of this stuff up around the bar. Just little reminders here and there.

She kept staring at the piece of metal clinging to the corner of the box, finally pulling it out with a sigh and sitting back on the stool. She ran her thumb over it a few times before pulling the other half out from under her shirt where it hung on a rope there. She didn't always where the dog tag, but it was a reminder of who she was. The one in her hand said "Carol Dan-" The one on her neck simply said "Vers".

She didn't explain it to Nyx. She just stared at it, rubbing her thumb over it again and again. "You know what's fucked up? There are days I wish I hadn't gotten my memories back...."

Nyx would have enjoyed knowing that she trusted him as much as she did. It was something he assumed didn't come lightly from her, and there was something about that trust he wanted to honor forever. Regardless, he'd be there for her as she needed him.

"Well, of course she is." Nyx corrected, because he hoped neither Monica or Maria were gone from the world. With some hope, maybe Carol could get out and go be with who she wanted, and live the life she wanted to be part of. Though people like them, never got what they wanted, only heartache from the things they missed.

The box seemed filled with more and more stuff, and it just was surprising to Nyx, but he didn't move fromt he spot, just to make sure Carol had all the time she needed. Carefully he looked to the dog tag. "Nah." Nyx responding pouring himself more booze and then reaching and pouring more of what she was drinking into her cup. "But all I have to say is without the memories you tend to lose focus on why you did all the things that you did." Nyx looked to his cup of liquor. "I lost my sister during the war. Our town was attacked and I was unable to save her." Nyx looked back to Carol. "That's what gives me strength to do what was needed to do." Nyx sighed swallowing the liquid in his cup, feeling the burn all the way through. "I refuse to let someone share the same fate as her, if I can help it." And he did a god damn good job at it.

She was grateful for the booze and the comment. A small and a nod as she reached over and pulled the drink towards her. He was right. It gave her focus. Knowing who she was given her purpose. And if she hadn't gotten those memories back, she'd probably still be a part of Star Force. She'd still be a tool for the Kree Empire.

She drank and nodded. She understood the pain of loss and turned to look at him with a sad expression before putting a hand on his shoulder and squeezing it hard. "To lost loves?" She raised her cup in a toast before taking another long drink.

"She'd be proud of you, I think. You're a good man, Nyx."

Sometimes all you needed was that purpose, and everything else fell right into place. For Nyx it was never a question what he had to do, but more a how was he going to achieve his goals. Despite his driving force being his sister and not saving her, and how did that haunt him, but he would use that as his driving force to ensure that he could stop that from happening to others.

A low smile, Nyx raised his glass some equally. "Yes." He would agree. Nyx swallowed what remained in his glass before laughing at Carol calling him a good man. He had heard that more than expected. Though he heard it enough and did good things, never felt as if he was a good man.

"Thank you, Carol." Nyx muttered. " But I'm okay at best."

She chuckled and shook her head. "Yeah, keep talking. If you're just okay where you come from, your world is much better off than my world," Carol chuckled with another shake of her head before her eyes went to the metal in her hands.

She closed her fist around it and finished what was in her glass, knowing she was going to feel this in the morning. "Thanks, though. For uh...hearing me out. And forgiving me when I totally forget about this conversation tomorrow."

That wasn't true. She wasn't going to forget it that easily, especially with such a potent reminder sitting on the bar in front of them.

She had a way with words. "I am just one man, one soldier, one person. I'm not some grand being." Nyx laughed. "It takes many to change the world, not just one. All I wanted to do is pave the way for people to have a brighter future." Nyx shook his head. "That doesn't make me any better than the next person." He smiled right at her.

"Hey. What are friends for, if not for being there when you're down?" Nyx shrugged poured more into his cup. "I'm sure you'd of done the same." Nyx commented. The man shrugged a little regarding her forgetting the conversation. He'd doubt that, but he'd not bring it up. There wasn't any purpose for him to dredge up the memories, if she wanted to talk, he'd be there. If not, he wasn't worried about it.

"Just know, I'm a message away." Nyx offered a happy smile. "Anytime you need."

Carol took a drink and nodded, smiling at Nyx and definitely feeling that alcohol weighing heavily on her mind. She just felt tired. "Hope you don't mind if I kick you out a little early...."

She didn't mean to be inhospitable, but it was....a lot. The photos. Talking about them. She sighed. "I'm just tired." Even if the evening was just inching closer, Carol already felt like it was time to close up the bar and trudge to bed. Sleep it off. Maybe for a few days.

"But uh...thanks again, Nyx. Feel free to take the bottle." She carefully got off the stool, reaching into the box to grab that same picture she'd been looking at earlier and offering him a brief smile as she grabbed the Asgardian bottle to go with her.

Nyx bursted out laughing with her politely kicking him out. "Done." Nyx capped the bottle he was drinking from and set it behind the bar. "Nah, I don't need this." Nyx smiled sliding of his barstool. Putting a hand on her shoulder he gave a light squeeze.

"Seriously. I got your back. You need to talk, let me know."

With that said, Nyx left the bar. The short visit was nice, but left him wanting for more interaction. Maybe he'd go find something to entertain him through the doors.
