John blinked up at her in surprise when she apologized, because it felt off brand and he didn't really know what to say about it. It made him feel awkward instead of smug (and really, he could do smug so well. But only when people deserved it.

He took a drag and the tension sort of went out of his shoulders until he was leaning on the bar, reaching across to offer her the smoke.
