Who: Clint Barton, Bucky Barnes
What: This is a date.
Where: Target.
When: Everything is happening right now.
Rating: B for besotted.

His birthday had been pretty much perfect and Clint had been riding high on that fact for a few weeks now. He was just unbearably smug some days because he just had a lot of really great stuff going for him right now. He had a great little coffee shop that he was super proud of, and even had a few employees now so he didn’t have to live there all the time. And he had a super great girlfriend who threw him movie watching parties and let him unwrap his other presents later on in privacy.

And he had Bucky, too.

Well, of all the things he had here in Starklandia, he’d had Bucky longest, even if he hadn’t really known it at the time. But it was good. They were building on something now, and it was exciting and fun and it felt important. Clearly that sort of importance was meant to be celebrated with a date, right?

At least that was what Clint had said, bidding Nock the turtwig and an angry pink bulldog goodbye before dragging Bucky off through the doors.

He’d been hoping for something romantic, he really had. But instead they’d walked straight into bright whites and reds and displays boasting the newest sales on the hottest stuff. Clint had always sort of thought Target was a funny place to walk into, considering.

It wasn’t a great date location, but they were here and Clint could make the best out of anything and he absolutely was going to show Bucky a good time. So bumped shoulders with Bucky and smiled. “You play your cards right, and I’ll get you a fancy slice of pizza from the place next to the Starbucks later,” he teased. “Two toppings.”

It wasn't going to be romantic. Probably. Well-- Clint squinted out at the store, all bright and loud but only in the fun way, not in the headachey kind of way that some stores sometimes got to be for him. This place wasn't a punishment to be in, not like Walmart was, and it wasn't that tiny bit stressful like places like Costco managed to be. Or malls, with their billion teenagers. It was just -- what it was. And he could work with it, he decided. Especially because it seemed like Bucky had never been here and Clint delighted in showing him new things.

"You've never been? Target? It's the best store on Earth. Well. Beside the Lego store. And that super expensive soap place that smells like candy. And those places in Japan that just sell weird snacks. Okay, so it's a pretty good store. And you gotta look at all that. It's Target law," he said, gesturing to the bins, which for once seemed the same seasonal appropriate as it was back in town. Which was to say everything was stamped with an American flag and was a little tacky. Which was actually perfect, because Clint knew there was some kind of party coming up. "C'mon," he said, tugging at Bucky's elbow even while he grabbed a cart. "It's all junk and we need at least 5 of everything. You're gonna look stupid hot in those sunglasses."

Bucky shook his head. He'd never been to one. Or a Walmart or a Costco. He'd never been to a mall, either. He'd been in outdoor marketplaces in Romania, but not anything like the store they were in now. HYDRA wasn't sending their living weapon into a retail store, and Bucky had tried to avoid any and all surveillance camera situations when he was on the run. Wakanda wasn't exactly boasting any Target stores either, so this was definitely a first.

He did know what Legos were, but a bit old for the targeted demographic when they were invented. Still, he'd built a few things out of them so he understood what it was when Clint brought up that there was a whole store devoted to them. Soaps that smelled like candy sounded excessive but maybe it'd make his hair smell good? Weird snacks were a risky little game, but he would've probably tried just about anything.

Bucky smirked when Clint tugged on his elbow and he walked along beside him. "Wait, what?" He looked at the sunglasses. They screamed Steve. The Star Spangled Man with a Plan definitely ought to be rocking them, but he took them anyway. "Really?" He slid them on and smirked. "These make me look like a dreamboat?"

Clint was picking through the rest of the bin of stuff, tossing random things into the cart without really looking at them before finding his own pair of sunglasses, funky heart shaped ones, still on the america theme. He didn't put them on though, instead looking up at Bucky and grinning brightly.

"Totally a dreamboat," he said, well, dreamily. Bucky could realistically pull about anything off and still look good doing it. Even if those sunglasses were one backward baseball cap and tank top short of a total Bro look. Still hot. Somehow. Maybe Clint was further gone than he'd thought. "We're getting those," he said pointedly. "And these." These were cheap looking plastic cups that boasted color changes. It was very important to Clint. "I wonder if they have sparklers."

Watching and observing while Clint took to shopping around in the value section endeared Bucky a lot more than he probably let on. It reminded him a bit of when they were at that convention and he was looking at merchandise and terrible artwork. Like the centaur and the Mervengers. All he knew was that they were getting those sunglasses and he was going to wear them regardless of how ridiculous they were. Because it made Clint happy, and that in turn made Bucky happy too. Anything, actually, that Clint pointed out was going to be deemed important and therefore a necessity.

"How does it change color though?" He asked, still on about the magic changey cups. He was looking at it like it was the newest, most advanced form of technology fresh out of the tech lab from Princess Shuri. "Huh." He set it in the cart, and let his hand trace along Clint's back between his shoulder blades as they shopped. "Hey, look at this little guy." His eyes lit up behind the glasses and he had to prop them up on top of his head. Bucky bent down and picked up a little action figure that made him grin from ear to ear. "Well, this is mine now."

"Science?" Clint hazarded a guess, shoulders lifting slightly. "Special paint? I dunno how it works, I just know it does. You must have missed that phase in the 90's, I guess. Everything was color change. I think I had an embarrassing amount of t-shirts that changed colors. Which, in retrospect, kind of embarrassing, because they only did it if you were hot or sweaty or whatever. Yikes."

They had to get away from these bargain bins. There was no reason anyone needed tiny packages of Fourth of July bubbles, but Clint had put some in the cart anyway.

Bucky's hand at his back was the best, most distracting weight ever and he smiled over it, almost stupidly pleased. It was like. Such a couples thing. Like walking around with your hand in someone else's back pocket. But less awkward.

"Oh my god," Clint was always delighted when there were toys of himself, he really was. There was just something ridiculous and funny and absurd about it -- kind of like all that fanart. It was weird and flattering. "Why are my hands so huge? Why is that so cute?" He paused, raising a flirtatious eyebrow at Bucky. "That was already yours, but it's cool you want a toy, too."

Like he wouldn't have done the same.

They were being kind of obnoxiously adorable in the way they were walking side by side, Bucky's hand splayed across Clint's back. But he liked it. He liked how good it felt and how good Clint made him feel. Bucky really liked just listening to him talk, borderlining on babbling sometimes. Him rattling off things about the 90's and all the little things that amused him. It had Bucky grinning. Clint could've been reciting lines from the encyclopedia of the history of silt and it still would've sounded like the best thing ever.

The way Clint looked really excited about the little action figure he'd found made Bucky's heart skip a little bit. The toy was ridiculously ill-proportioned in the fact that its hands and feet were enormous and it had no neck. But somehow it was really cute, just as he'd said.

When Clint looked at him that way, and kinda flirted, it made Bucky's cheeks burn a little. "I like your hands," he said. "Your real hands." Maybe he could flirt too. This was a date, after all.

Oh, it was a terrible toy. But it was still of Clint, which meant that it was a little bit cool while being terrible. And it also meant that somewhere in this store there were other figures hanging around, probably. He could get a whole set if he felt like it.

But maybe not. That'd ruin how this one was special and how Bucky totally had found it and wanted it just because it was Clint. Even if it did have enormous feet and hands. Just bad proportion in general, really. But that was what kids toys were about, he supposed.

The flirting though, that was -- yeah. He could get behind that. Especially because Bucky blushed cutely. "Yeah?" he signed it, because there was no better way to bring attention to his hands than to talk with them. "I like your face."

Bucky was going to keep that little toy forever. It was now his new favorite thing and he was going to make sure it was prominently featured in his house somehow. As long as that asshole goat of his didn't try to eat it, which very well could happen. He'd have to put it up too high for the little shit to get it.

Flirting was fun. Bucky came by it naturally; he used to flirt with just about any person with a pulse back in the day but obviously now he was far more selective. And by selective that was really just Clint and Natasha.

His lips curled into a higher grin. That was such a Clint way of showing off exactly what Bucky had just pointed out. He caught one of those hands and turned it to kiss his palm. "That's good to know." He kept hold of Clint's hand and laced their fingers. That felt really good.

"What in the world--" His thought train of being completely wooed by Clint Barton temporarily derailed as they came upon a display of facial peel masks in the cosmetic section that looked like cartoon animals.

Yeah, that goat was weird and kind of an asshole. It'd tried eating Clint's shirt the other day, and he'd still been wearing it, even. He wasn't going to question the fact that sometimes it wandered into Bucky's place though. Sometimes you just needed a goat doing whatever it was goats did, he guessed.

What really felt good, was the way he just got warm all over when Bucky kissed his palm, and then decided that they needed to hold hands about it. It was just -- it was so simple and great and it was just really nice knowing that there could be things in life that were uncomplicated and perfect. Bucky was like that, and Clint loved it.

He paused though, staring at the packages in clear confusion before he actually figured out what they were supposed to be. "Huhhh," he said, slow and considering. "Alright. Dragon or otter? This is a really important question."

The goat was such a sassy little prick, but for whatever reason Bucky kept it around. He took care of it, fed it, sometimes even let the fucker sleep in the house -- which really was just because if he didn't he knew he'd end up with a kicked in door that he'd have to fix the next day and it was just easier to let the damn thing in. Not only that, he'd have to hear it making that stupid bleating sound. Sassy little cuss of a creature.

As complicated as his life had been over the past near century? Bucky was really relieved to have some normalcy and simplicity. The situation they were in with this town and the doors and everything else that seemed to be happening was definitely insane but despite all of that they'd been able to find each other and in doing so find something that was so incredibly precious to him. Something he loved. Someone.

"Otter," he said, and gave a confirming nod. "Definitely." He gave Clint a playful nudge. "I'd say let's both get them and put them on to scare Natalia but she might actually kill us."
